  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Have a 2009 Genesis with approx. 120K
Within the last year it seems as if the clear coat on all the door handles and both side view mirrors have started bubbling and/or peeling.

Anybody else have this problem?

I did replace the driver side door handle when the button stopped working and the paint on that door handle still looks great.

I know the rear bumper was repainted but doubt the entire car was.

At this point I was wonder what would be the best option the fix this.
1) have them repainted
2) replace the handle and side view mirrors

Wonder what would be more cost effective.

I'd get a quote from a body shop for a mirror/door handle repaint and clearcoat. It also may be an indication that the clearcoat is failing on the whole car and may need a repaint soon.

If the car has not been washed regularly over the years and has not been waxed or has had harsh detergents then clear coats may begin to fail. My son in-law's family seem to never wash or wax their vehicles and when they do they use strong detergents and everyone of his extended family's cars regardless of make has peeling clear coat after about 5 years. He also gets an oil change only once a year if then and he drive about 20,000 miles a year.

I have a 2016 Hyundai Accent that has started to do exactly the same thing. Trying to get in touch with Hyundai in Australia seems to be a complete and utter waste of time - they have slim to no interest in doing anything about the issue.

My 2014 Genesis R-Spec has started going the same thing about 6 months ago. About 2 years ago we moved and I started parking it outside instead of an unground garage. Soon after the clearcoat on the mirrors began to look like yours, and the headlight plastic began to glaze as well. Admittedly, the car is not washed regularly and hardly ever waxed. Both I'm sure would help dramatically.
