  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello,

So recently I was in a collision (rear-end) with a 2014 genesis. The accident was totally my fault. It was very low impact (me and the passengers in the car were not sure the driver even noticed it at first) so we decided to exchange info and that the driver would take it to a shop to get looked at for damage (if any). Anyway I later receive a call from the driver stating that he took it to a collision center and he presented me with a quote for $1600

Now I'm really surprised here and I'm wondering if anyone on here can give advise. I really feel like I'm being scammed here.

The quote is for two parts:

First the headrests have to be replaced because they were partially deployed  I did a little research and landed on this forum. From what I saw it appears that these can be reset pretty simply? I was told they were similar to airbags and once they deploy they have to be replaced. Cost of headrest replacement is $500 each.

Secondly, it looks like they need $600 to paint the rear bumper. I will post a picture of the bumper but originally at the accident we did not even notice any damage.

The dealer or collision shop probably is not authorized to reset the head rest. And who knows if it will function properly after it's been deployed.

As for the bumper, there may be damage to the foam structure under the bumper that you can't see until it's pulled off. There is a large foam impact bumper under the bumper body panel. If it's juts a repaint, I can't tell from the picture if there was any paint damage. But since it had to flex since you set off the head rest, it may have spider webbed the paint.

Who is the scammer here? If you don't believe the quote, let your insurance handle the claim. You do have insurance, right?????

Yeah this is an issue that his insurance company should be ironing out with your insurance company.

Genesis costs are high for repairs, both collision and out of warranty mechanicals. These are not small wallet cars. My friend had a ~$5000 bill from a parking lot hit-n-run where the the left rear quarter and bumper were trashed, requiring replacement, and half the car needed respray and blend. Then later found the left rear UCA was bent, for another $800+. Insurance paid it all after deductible, fortunately.

Headrests can usually be reset if they weren't messed with. There are numerous posts on this form for how-to. If not done correctly, however, they can get stuck in the wrong position and need replacing. $500 each is probably about right for replacement if really necessary.

If that little black smudge on the right of the bumper won't buff out, then $600 for repainting that fancy white pearl metallic is pretty cheap. The plastic chrome trim pieces are $25+ each assuming they can get them on-and-off without snapping them and if they're not already cracked from the hit. Then they have to disconnect/reconnect all the parking sensors, etc. It's not a quick or easy touch-up job. Ditto the above comment about the foam.

So either write them the $1k check and be done with it, or deal with your insurance.
