Comments on Adaptive Cruise Control

i tested the adaptive cruise the other day from 38mph to 0mph (stop sign with a car in front). the car came to a complete stop without ever touching a pedal!! then as the car turn it started to roll but a msg came on and said ssc cancelled (or something along those lines). but that should help clear the speculation of a "complete" stop. i love it..

I dunno if I'd call it ballsy to trust the system - it never feels awkward. It does accelerate a bit too slowly for my lead foot, but other than that, I've never once felt unsafe using it. In fact, I find myself wishing for a switch that would let it run continuously, from 0 MPH +, so that I could use it in bumper to bumper traffic.

I'm willing to be the reason they don't allow this is so that some turd doesn't stop at a light behind another car with ACC on, then have the guy in front make a right-on-red, and then the Genny rolls through the stop and gets t-boned. Heh. Too bad morons have to ruin it for us all.

not really. foot hovering over brake anticipating having to use it but it never came close it was like the car in front of me by about 40-50ft was towing my car. the genesis slowed as he/she braked right down to the stop and the genesis stopped 40-50ft fromt he stop sign, plenty of room to conduct an emergency maneuver lol..
 
when the SCC is engaged and the car needs to slow down, I assume it lits up the brake lights. Is this the case?

And fwiw, the Equus has a small display above the speedometer. When using cruise it has a picture of your car and a clear lane, a picture of another car if one is detected, and the pic of your car shows brake lights if cruise applies them. No brake lights for engine braking.

awesome. i almost bought the base Equus lol. i swear if we drove one we may have done it (would've totally defeated the purpose of our trip to Hyundai but wth right?)

i saw the new screen they are putting in '12 Genesis' in the new sonata loaner they gave me. i like it. very clear and "hi-tech" looking LCD, as they also show it in my '11 manual as "type II" the one that is currently in our genesis' is the "Type I" and then there was this hideous looking "type A" which looks ancient lol..
 
I went to 2011 NY Auto Show yesterday and no one on the floor could answer my questions on adaptive cruise control so here they are:
1. If car in front of you comes to a complete stop will the ACC stop you completely without your intervention?
2. If you stop completely without pressing the brake will ACC then accelerate you when the vehicle in front of you accelerates without reengaging the system.
I feel that this is critical in stop and go traffic.

The car comes to a complete stop. I know because I tried it. My foot was poised to hit the brakes, but it wasn't necessary. After a stop you have to reset the system, I believe.
 
WARNING: Comments on Adaptive Cruise Control

The cruise control will apply some percentage of maximum braking when a car that you have already "locked on to" comes to a stop in front of you. This means that the SCC has been set, and the system is tracking the vehicle in front of you, shown by the image of a vehicle on your screen.

IT WILL NOT STOP YOU if you approach a vehicle stopped on the road if it has been there and you approach it from a distance while it remains stopped. In this case you will slam into the back of it and the SCC will not have time to lock on and apply the brakes.

The manual can clarify this for you. \\

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but I just picked up a 2012 Genesis yesterday, and several times already, I thought I was going to be rear-ended due the ACC slamming on the brakes in traffic on the highway. I understand it was trying to keep a pre-specified distance, but in my opinion, it did not need to slam on the brakes to that extent. It's like it was hedging it's bets, on account of the possibility the car in front might suddenly slow dramatically, and braked more than it really needed to.

Just wondering how long it took you to adapt;) to the ACC. So far, I don't really like it, because it is always slowing me down before, in my opinion, I really need to and to a greater extent than I need to. Then after I change lanes, the car has to speed back up, thus reducing my gas mileage. Bear in mind that I have not had an accident or traffic ticket in over 20 years, so my driving record is pretty good all by my lonesome.

It would be a much better system if the "smart" could be turned off.
 
i always set mine to least possible sensitivity ... but i'd guess that is driver/location dependent. i, too, wish it could be turned off.
 
I agree, I have it on my 2013. I like it but I would prefer being able to have 'regular' cruise too. An on/off switch would be great.
 
Hi All, having used the CC/Smart for a good few freeway miles I tend to agree that an On/Off Smart switch would be most acceptable..
2 ?'s -> when cc/smart is On how does the driver kno' if the vehicle is operating the brakes or using engine braking at any given time? Can we be assured the Brake Lights activate at the correct juncture in time?
(I'm usually so intent on the road ahead I miss any dashboard or centre console alerts) ;)

What distance is it set at? On the highway I always use 80 feet, doesn't slow or brake too soon at all. At slower speeds I usually set it at 130 feet to avoid the sudden slams.
My only wish is that at 80 feet there was a way to communicat to those behind me that I intend to do 80 again as soon as its safe to do so. Would keep them off my ass.

Well, I don't know about feet. I just see on the display that there are three settings to choose from. Does each setting correspond to a certain number of feet?

In my opinion the smart cruise works perfect !....It slows you down and keeps a steady distance between the car in front of you and then when you pull out to the left lane it speeds back up to your desired speed.

A regular cruise control, would have you apply your brakes and wait until the car in the left lane passes you and then you could pull out to the left lane and re-set the cruise control when you reached your desired speed again.

What's not to like? These are like the arguments of why an Axe is better than a Chainsaw.

Well, it was getting on the brakes, hard. Kind of alarming actually, with people behind me in traffic. The salesman should have given me some expectations for it.

Like any other new technology, you just have to get used to it. I have 25,000 highway miles on my Genesis with Cruise. I drive to Florida each year from the Midwest. It works flawlessly.
