Hi All- the other day someone "gave" me a 90,000+ mile 2010 2.0T motor... because it had broken a connecting rod and thrashed the block....that is all I know of the motor's history. I took it apart to "see" what happened. Near as I can tell, the #1 rod broke in two- like a piece of hard candy- and the shrapnel destroyed everything near it. Interestingly- the Main and Rod Bearings were in perfect condition, even the broken rod, still on the crank throw, had perfect bearings in it. The 3 surviving pistons were good, straight, and within spec for the bore diameter. Here's the kicker: 2 of the 3 surviving rods were bent! looking at the beam from the side the bend is visible to the eye. Comment: Apparently the early 2.0 motors used 'powdered metal" rods, and later Hyundai went to "forged" rods for their stronger, more performance-oriented characteristics... My question is: Does anyone know for sure if the later motors indeed use forged rods, or did I just imagine hearing or reading this...? If they do use forged rods- does anyone know WHEN they changed over? I own a '13 2.0 and this is making me uneasy... if you know what I mean...! Put on your Thinking/Informed/Researcher Hats, Folks Thanks! E
