Considering a 2010 3.8 with Premium Package and Premium Navigation Package

Looking this weekend to /lease purchase; would like any input or recommendations from anyone who has these options.

Any particular reason why you chose the 3.8 with those packages? Price? Features? Gas mileage? Just curious.

Before you consider the Premium nav check out the Tech package. compare the two and play with both! This way there is no regrets later. I wanted the 4.6 tech and ended up with the 3.8 Tech, BUT I tested both and never regretted buying the 3.8!

I own a 2010 3.8 with the touch screen navi. At first I didn't think I would like the top of the line Navi with the control nob but after owning the touch screen I kinda wish I got the tech package. Just because it has more features and it looks cool. I did consider with the more toys in the car the more chances its going to cost me more $$ for repairs later down the road incase it does fail. check both systems out and see which one you like.

As someone who has an after market touch screen Nav in his car (not Genesis--'04 ES 330), I'd look at options that allow use of a controller rather than touchscreen.

If the knob control is not onerous (i.e. it is user friendly), that's the way I'd go.

The fingerprints on my touch screen can be annoying. I literally have a terry cloth mit in my center console and wipe the screen down every other day or so.

I would like to tell you one thing, I never liked the tech package or OEM navigation for any luxury car. This is a pure gimmick. Go with the premium package and get a TomTom or garmin navi for $300 and you will be happy. Bythe way if you take an average we hardly use Navigation in day to day life. I have my Lexus RX 450 with navigation and harly ever use it.

The reasons why you'd get the Tech package on a 2010 instead of the "Premium Navigation" aka touchscreen package would be the 17-speaker Lexicon system, which despite being weak in bass (perhaps accurate and rich, but definitely not thumping) is one of the best OEM systems on wheels or the uplift features like radar-assisted cruise control, electronic parking brake, or HD Radio tuner. The display is larger with the Tech package compared to Premium Nav.

The joystick/knob controller is pretty easy to use, and it is nice not to have fingerprints and screen coating wear on the display.

HOWEVER, the system is unchanged from the 2009 Tech Package which means:

It's not the worst but certainly not the best nav system out there. Manual entry is difficult if you don't know the EXACT street name with directional and suffix. Voice entry of the address is easier. Maps are old (April 2008) and unless they drop a map update in close proximity to your purchase date, you're stuck with either old maps or an expensive map update.

No Bluetooth A2DP profile, so no streaming music over BT from a portable device. Lots of nitpicks on iPod control, speed of navigating large folders on MP3, song display, and so on. No mobile phonebook sync. No way to back up settings either.

In short, Tech Package has better sounding audio system and more gadgets versus more functional GPS (perhaps) and better audio and phone controls with Premium Nav.

I agree, if GPS is the only consideration, since pretty much any decent portable nav unit today can destroy pretty much any integrated OEM system in terms of features and updates.

For me, it was the gadgets and the audio that drove me to the Tech package. Though, if you're into aftermarket upgrades, you probably can do okay with Premium or Base configurations.

We'll see how future systems develop for this car. While Hyundai may still use Harman for the sound components, I think they'll use internally developed systems, probably in partnership with Microsoft. My guess is that the mid-gen refresh (probably 2011) will have the Sync-like system.

The one thing I love about integrated NAV systems is you can have the music cranked up and when you need to be prompted the system lowers the music, chimes in and then returns the music. You can't do that with any portable. I don't use NAV much at all so my VZ Navigator in my phone does the trick, but if I used it a lot I may have sprung for the tech package. When I do use it I have to keep the volume fairly low so I can hear it.

So true. I had it in my last car and I never used it. The only time I would use it would be for road trips maybe half a dozen times a year, and to pay 3k more for that seemed kinda silly to me. Same goes for the Radar guided cruise control in the 2010. Is it a great feature? You bet. But like I said, I've used cruise control maybe 6 times in a year. I'm thinking a trip to Hawaii is better use of the money.

Go for it. That's what my dealer had and I'm happy with both packages. For me, the tech pkg wasn't worth the extra cost- don't rush your decision. Drive both and see if you feel you are missing something. I don't feel you should compromise with a new vehicle- just my philosophy.
