  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello everyone.

Looking to get into a sporty/luxury car. I drove a 2013 R spec today and loved it. Very quiet, nice ride, and pretty quick. I liked the transmission. The car seems in great shape. It has 40k miles. The only real issue I found is the menu button on the infotainment control gets stuck. I've looked them up on ebay. A little pricey, but easy enough to replace if I can't fix this one.

I'm pretty handy. I've done a lot of work on motorcycles and on my current Mazdaspeed. I don't mind fixing stuff myself. But I want a reliable powertrain that gets me from A to B. I've read about the piston ring issues on early 2012's leading to oil consumption. I've also read about some trans casting issue on 2012 and early 2013's but never found a source or affected VIN range or what the problem really was besides a hard shift around 3rd gear. So I'm looking for a '13 or '14.

The car I drove today for 15-20 min felt great. Super smooth. Is a 2013-2014 a pretty safe bet? I can get this one I'm looking at for 17k otd. The dilemma is go for this seeming bargain, or spend an extra $5k for a carmax car with maxcare tacked on or a 2015+ CPO with the remainder of the 10/100k warranty?

I like that the 2013-14 is lighter than the 15+ by a big margin. But I've heard the 15+ drives much better.

The other cars I've considered are a F30 335i and C7 Audi A6. I feel the Hyundai is friendlier to work on myself. It doesn't look like it requires special tools and computers to work on. And overall a n/a V8 should be the most reliable power train.

:welcome: to the forum!

Genesis cars are inexpensive to buy for what you get, but expensive to repair out of warranty at the dealer (like German luxury car $$$). If you're handy with tools and can DIY with ebay parts, then they can be quite a bargain, w/r/t cost of ownership. The very early '15s had 1st model year issues with body welds & sunroofs, so I'd avoid any that were built in '14.

Never heard about transmission casting issues. The Hyundai transmission issues were sorted by the end of 2012. So you really cannot go wrong with a low miles '13 or '14 and an extended warranty. They're great cars.

Yeah, I'm aware that maintenance is going to be expensive on a car that originally sold for $40k+ if I can't do it myself. That's ok. I know stuff is going to break, I just want to hedge my bets it won't be something breaking every month that prevents me from getting to work.

This car seems like it'll be way cheaper to own and maintain than a 335xi... as long as the trans doesn't act up... lol. Glad to hear the trans issue was sorted by the end of '12. I really like this '13, and I'm happy with where the price is. I might see what they charge for a 3rd party warranty just in case.
