If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hi,

I am wondering what owners opinions are on buying a 2012 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 now. I am looking at models with about 100,000 km's (62k miles).

Are their any maintenance horrors for this model at this age? Maintenance cost?

Any input is very appreciated

Only major issue with the 3.8 Genesis during 2012 was that it was the first model year of the new Hyundai 8-speed transmission, and some of them had to be replaced under warranty. Not all transmissions were affected, but I cannot tell you the specific production dates that were affected.

From what I believe, 2012-13-14 were the best of the Gen 1 series. I have a 2013 3.8 Tech Pkg and have had zero issues with anything and currently have about 90K km (55K miles).

Except for the 2009 Genesis 4.6 V8 (first year for that engine), the 2009-2011 models were very reliable, except for the 17-speeaker Lexicon system.

2012 @80k miles. My only issues are typical squeaky idler pulley that was replaced and at 78k miles, my brakes went mushy. Moisture in the brake system was the problem and a flush and fluid replacement fixed the problem. Still is a gorgeous car- just hard to believe it's only worth $10-12k.

Thanks for the replies!

I am so confused on why they are so cheap at about 5 years old with 100k km's. They are cheaper than many cars that I would say are of less quality such as a Chrysler 300, lexus ES 350, lexus GS 350 etc... (the lexus is probably more reliable, but less luxurious)

There should be a logical reason for why it is cheaper but I cant seem to figure out why.

I would go with a 2013 or 2014 model and get an extended warranty if you can. I did not but that was simply due to finances at the time...so far so good! knocking on wood!!!!
better infotainment system and simply 1 or 2 years newer in the model cycle (typically less "issues")

I am new to this forum as I picked up a 2012 Genesis 3.8 with 35k miles at a Volvo dealer about 4 months ago.

Because of the issues with the 8 speed transmiss and all the bells and whistles on this car, I bought an extended warranty from my local Hyundai dealership, it was underwritten by Zurich America. I shopped around and decided on this one because the dealer will waive the $100 deductible if I use them for a warranty claim.

I’m glad I did, because occasionally I have noticed hard shifting between second and third. The engine sometimes winds out in 2nd and slams into 3rd. Other than that, I’m happy with the purchase. I really wanted a bigger car and not have to sacrifice power and fuel economy.

I have bought several used cars with high mileage and always set aside at least $2k for unscheduled maintenance. To do so, I have to get a good deal on the car, so I am patient until the right one comes along.

I think if you buy a certified pre owned Genesis, it comes with the balance of the original warranty. Good luck.

Hi Juan! I still have my 2012 3.8L we bought new in June of 2011. So far we still love it, and we have 72,300 miles on it. Other than regular maintenance and a couple of recalls, it's not been a problem. I'll go into detail:

2012: 1 year into ownership the battery failed and was replaced under warranty.
2012: I installed a VIM video kit to override the vehicle in motion lockout for the nav screen. No issues.
2013: Moved car to OH - late in year had recall for brake fluid. Had to have headlight control/turng signal stalk replaced under warranty due to defect that caused lights to randomly wink out.
2013: OEM tires cracked and wore out, replaced under tire warranty.
2014: Rec'd error code regarding transmission - I used my own diagnostic tool to determine it was a faulty transmission temp sensor. Replaced under warranty.
2016: The front and rear bumper (this is a white pearl car) started showing brown spotting under the clear coat, so under the Simonize paint warranty, we had the bumpers repainted, no charge.
2017: The clear coat on bumpers peeled due to bad batch from body shop (we used a reputable shop across street from Hyundai dealer in Columbus), so bumpers were cleaned and repainted. At same time due to a mixup in communications the roof was painted. Nice job, though (there was some peeling paint just above the windshield). Sinc the mixup was on the part of the body/paint shop owner, he only charged me $100 for a $600 paint job.2918: Batttery failed (Feb), so I replaced it with an AutoZone Gold (good warranty) battery.

and today I dropped it off:
2018: At dealer for seat belt mount bolts and water/moisture in right headlight assembly.

Other than oil changes, which I mostly do myself, and air filter (I use a K&N and clean it twice a year) it's been good. I'm going to replace the brakes in a couple of weeks as well myself, as it's an easy job.
Well, one more thing. From time to time, the proximity sensors go wonky. But it clears and they can never pinpoint the problem.

So that's pretty much the story of our Genny. We love it. Still.

...the logical reason is that they were $10K or more cheaper to begin with.

READ the fine print in your Zurich contract.

They are 'fine printing' me now on a headlight claim.

I am beginning to see same xmission issue at 113K. It apparently is a known problem w/ quality of valve body in xmission. Only 'fix' is a new xmission. Remanufactured from Hyundai is around $4K installed. If you have a warranty, get it done now while you can. There is a lot of info out there about this issue, but it's something you don't look for until you experience the problem. I am too late now at 113K and I am prob not going to spend $4K on the car for something that happens infrequently.

Except for the 2009 Genesis 4.6 V8 (first year for that engine), the 2009-2011 models were very reliable, except for the 17-speeaker Lexicon system.

I personally haven't read/seen the threads regarding the stereo system apparently. My CD drive does not work, but everything else on my Lexicon system is working just fine.

And yeah... the 09(and early 10 models I think too) 4.6L with that damned valve spring issue.....

But yeah, if you're looking at a 2012 V6, you shouldn't have any major engine issues to be concerned with, not majorly common ones anyway.

Thanks for the replies!

Brand recognition and history. No matter how delusional some Genesis owners are with their pride in their discounted luxury car, that's what it is. Discounted luxury.

If someone went out and said "I drive a Mercedes-Benz" or "I drive a new Lexus" etc, people are going to instantly recognize that as a luxury brand and assume it's a nicer car. When someone walks up and says "I drive a Hyundai" they gloss over and the following word "Genesis" means nothing to that person. You drive a Hyundai no matter how proud you are of the features in your Genesis compared to the higher end brands. Some materials and fit and finish items are also noticeable cheaper, but between the Genesis name not at all being prestigious like MB or Lexus or BMW yet, as far as luxury goes, and the Genesis always being slightly behind on quality or features, it's always going to command a lower initial price and therefore a much lower secondhand price.

Embrace the cheapness of used Genesis cars. You can get 80% of the ride quality, 80% of the handling performance, and in most cases better engine performance compared to the higher end brands and at a very very nice discounted price. Enjoy that! lol
