  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My wife and I are I know the newer V6 are direction and the cars come with a 8 speed automatic but do they suffer the same dry start issue as the earlier v6 models?

What is the dry start issue? I have a 2012, and I have never noticed anything negative about my engine.

I also have a 2012 and have not experienced any dry start issue. It is a bit noisy on very cold mornings but settles down after a few minutes.

I think he is talking about transmission/throttle lag when the engine goes from nearly stopped to stomping on the gas peddle. Not really an engine problem per se.

No I'm talking about how you can hear what sounds like lifters for the first 2-3 seconds of turning on the car after it sits for a long period of time, like over night. Its due to the oil draining back off into the engine from the oil filter being located on top of the engine in the rear.

Where is the oil filter located on the 2012+ models?

Bottom of engine, for both V6 and V8. If you think it is a problem on your current car, try synthetic motor oil.

I have the same issue with my 2010 4.6L V8. Sometimes it takes 10-15 seconds to settle down..... and I'm talking about ambient temps around 40*F.

Oil filter has always been at bottom of engine on the Tau V8.

I've always ran synthetic oil in my can and not that syn blend crap either and the cold start issues still occur. yet Hyundai states this is perfectly normal.

Yeah, Hyundai says it's normal even though my car sounds like it's eating itself from the inside every time I start it cold.

A lot of engines sound noisy during start up, so I can't really say. I have not noticed anything unusual with my 3.8.

I've owned over 20 cars with 150k+ miles on them and none of them have sounded like this 3.8. I drive on average 35-45k miles a year. This engine I don't think will last that long without something majorly wore out internally.

Mark what year is your car and where is the oil filter located?

2009 3.8 V6 with filter on top. I have 47K miles and only drive it about 3-4times a week. I use Mobil 1. Also, I use the old OEM filters with black plastic end caps (not the new OEM ones with white end caps) and I don't over-tighten filter housing (I do my own oil changes).

If my engine makes too much noise, maybe I don't notice it anymore. Also, my car sits in an attached garage which never gets below 40F (usually a lot warmer) regardless of how cold it is outside.

My car didn't do it at first but then it start doing it every once in awhile when it was closer for the warranty to be up. After warranty and the higher mileage it does it every time the car sits for 6+ hours.

I don't think temp has anything to do with it as I live in Florida and it does it on days where its 80 degrees outside. I can't tell you which filter the dealership uses when I get my oil changes done.

If you are the original owner, there is a 10 year / 100K mile (whichever comes first) warranty on the drivetrain (engine and transmission).

I would test drive a used Genesis V6 (2009-2011) and see if it also makes that noise. If you feel there is a problem, and the dealer blows you off, open a case with Hyundai Motor America.

For me, the engine valve-train noise seems a function of outside temperature. This January, I was in the Detroit suburbs with a cold engine and the outside temperature of 5 degrees below zero. Upon starting the engine, I immediately got onto an interstate. At a speed of 70 mph, it probably took 5-10 minutes before the valve clatter subsided and the engine warmed. Normally, the car is garaged and at temperatures above 32 degrees, the engine sounds fine. I use Mobil 1 0w-20 and the car does not consume oil, so it's in the engjine all year.

unfortunately I'm the 2nd owner and my warrenty expired at the 60k mark. The problem with test driving another v6 genesis is that I have no idea it the car has been sitting for a extended period of time without being turned on.

However my service advisor states this is a common complaint amongst these cars and that hyundai states its perfectly normal. I refuse to believe it being perfectly normal because the car didn't do this when it had 38k miles on it but now does it with a bit more wear on the engine.

I would be interested in seeing exactly what kind of oil filter your dealer uses. Can you unscrew the filter cap and post a pic (don't have to remove the filter). You will need a 27mm socket to remove the plastic filter cap.

Also, I would consider using 5W-30 synthetic. 5W-20 may be too thin, and you should not have cold start issues with a 5W-30 synthetic.
