  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi Folks

I wrote to Continental Tires asking when the ExtremeContact DWS in our size would be available. They replied saying 2-3 months at the earliest. However, I need new tires before that and would like to get good all-season tires.

Although there are other very good alternatives available, I was thinking of going up a size (width) in order to buy them now. According to the miata.net tire size calculator a 255/45R18 is almost an exact match for overall diameter. The side wall height differs by only 0.1 in. The section width and rim width differ by about 0.7 in, as expected.

I would be interested in others thoughts or experiences in such a change.
Many thanks

I have done similar changes on other cars and have been generally satisfied. I have never had any ill effects. As long as they don't rub anywhere and they are the same diameter it should not be a problem. As a side benefit, since it seems that maximum acceleration is controlled by a combination of the computer and traction control, if you can increase the traction and delay the onset of wheel spin, the computer will allow more of the available power to get to the wheels. Since the car is capable of boiling the hides when the traction control is completely disabled then if you can get more traction the car should be considerably quicker. Just a theory but maybe so.

I went with the 245/45/18's in this tire and they look awesome and ride amazingly well, however, 375HP is a little much for punching it at a stop light. They are a little too hard of a compound and will squeel easily off the line. However, in every other aspect, they are awesome!

How are they from a noise persective? I have read that these are fairly quiet tires, but, I personally have found other Conti's to be fairly noisy. How do they comapre with the OEM Dunlops?

Great questions!

Remember, these are 60K mile tires and so the compound is not as sticky as the Dunlops.

I have had my share of Conti's on my old 4Runner as well as Tundra. They were horrible and the belts broke in everyone of them within 10K miles. You get that bad wobble-wobble noise. This had me being very cautious with the tires for my Genny but after several top notch reviews and a consumer reports.org HIGH rating...I decided to give them a try!

I have had NO noise issues whatsoever with these DWS's. They are smooth and track very well. Even if you wanted to hydroplane in these tires you would be unsuccessfull. They are amazing in the rain. With that in mind, the winter is near and I am cautious to see how they will do when the temps are near freezing. Who knows, they may become like 44 super swampers and ride like a set of concrete wheels. (rough)

At this point, I am VERY pleased with my purchase especially at the price I got them for through discounttiredirect.com.

I also had them road force balanced which is a MUST for todays tires!

if you or anybody have anymore questions please do not hesitate to ask!

"have had NO noise issues whatsoever with these DWS's."

How does the noise compare to the Dunlops?

Thank you all. I'll buy them :)

I traded my Dunlops for the Continental Extreme Contact DWS 235-50-18 and I am very pleased with the ride quality and low road noise over the Dunlops. Going with a tire size different from the recommended tire size may throw the speedometer off by a couple of miles. If you can try and get the the correct tire size. Try Tire Rack they may have them in stock. If you are not pushed to buy now I would wait it out. The Continental Extreme Contact DWS seems to be in great demand so much so that many sizes are on back order. The Tire Rack rating on this tire is off the charts, tire is rated #1 in it's class.

My most recent cars have been the 2007 LS460 and 2007 Cadillac DTS Performance. Due to to many problems to mention I bailed out of my LS460 eight months after purchase. I traded the Cadillac for the Genesis. I am very pleased with the Genesis and after three months of ownership and 0ne thousand miles I have no complaints.

Good luck with your tire purchase.

Good to hear MHT.

TireRack and DirectTire don't have them in stock and gave the same 2-3 months as Continental. :(
