I am trying to see if anyone on the Rspec Forum has had any issues with the Conti-ProContact Continentals that come on the 2013 Rspec. They are the stock tires 235/45R/19. I had one of the tires form a bubble/soft spot on the sidewall, and it simply leaked out. I have not run over anything, no road hazard etc.

I only have 2340 miles on car/tires. I looked up information/complaints made to the NHTSA.Gov web site regarding this specific sidewall bubble issue and I found that there were 38 complaints filed regarding the ContiProContract tires having bubbles on the sidewalls, thus the tires were ruined and/or failed, and they also had very low mileage, and their replacement ContiProContact tires also had sidewall bubble defect issues.

I have had a number of Continental tires on other cars with no issues at all. I had a set of Continental Extreme Contact DWS tires on my old Lincoln LS, and they were great tires. So, I looked on the NHTSA data base to see if there were any sidewall defect/bubble complaints for the Extreme Contacts. There was only 1.

After looking at the information I feel for sure there is a problem with the ContiProContact series of tires. Quick answer from the dealer before they even saw the tire was that is was a road hazard issue. That's bull in my opinion. So waiting to see what the Continental folks say.

Bottomline is that i do not like reading about these defects and how they effected other folks, and riding around on these specific tires which have many complaints of going out for no reason. Has anyone else run into this problem? Thanks in advance. DP

Haven't had any problems, but my car car is a July 2011 build. One or more later manufacturing batches might be responsible

EX-man: Thanks for the response. Will see if anyone comes up with this bubble sidewall issue. I did read some posts on this forum from 2012 regarding sidewall bubble on these OEM contiprocontacts. DP

This CAN be caused by a defect, but the vast majority of the time a bulge in the sidewalls the result of an hard impact such as a pot hole.

10-4 .. I'm well aware of pot holes etc ..... that's why my wife doesnt drive the Rspec. She vips around in the Sonata. But when you see 100's of complaints of sidewall bubbles on one series of tires, and not Conti's other series, that is pointing toward a flaw/defect issue.

OK, let me go drive around in my doughnut mobile until the tire gets in today. Check out the ratio of sidewall complaints for contiprocontact, and look at Continentals other series. I'm sure some of these complaints are pot hole related, but not all of them, etc. Not a good deal.

Well, the dealer looked at the tire and once they saw it, they said according to their expreience the tire had a defect. So will wait and see what Continental says, then will report info back to the forum. $262 for new tire with mounting etc. Regards, DP.

If defective why did you pay for the tire? A continental tire dealer would give you a tire less any prorated amount of miles or tread depth if applicable.

FYI-aside from a defect that should be handled by Continental, you can by a road hazard warranty from Discount Tire. I went in for a rotation and the rep said I could buy the warranty even though I did not buy the tires from them. Just a thought for the future.

Homeofstone: I agree with you that I should not have paid for the tire, but I am just run down beat health wise, thus I just roll over for them. Normally I would have called continental and been all over them regarding the defect, etc. So, I 'm just picking my battles according to my energy level and the seat ordeal is a bigger battle than the tire. Regardless, thanks for your input. DP

Just an update. Not holding my breath, but still waiting for a reply from Continental on the deflective side wall tire issue. The dealership has contacted me 3 times to advise that they are waiting to hear from tire rep.

At least the dealership said the tire was deflective, and when I was there for a visit, the tire was marked deflective and sitting in the parts room.

I would never put those tires on my Genesis! We have a 2007 Ford Edge also and my daughter had a 2007 also and mine with 9,000 miles on it had a bubble appear under the tread on one back tire on a trip to Los Angles from SF and on the way back the same thing happened on the tire on the way back the same thing happened to my daughter. The answer is to put another brand on the car. I have talked to tire shops and I was told this is normal for Conti tires

Dicko - the info you gave is exactly what i found when looking at the ContiPro NHTSA complaints ... see my original post. I have had a number of Continental Extreme Contact DWS tires and never had any issues, and these no events for the DWS tire is consistent with what i found when also looking at the data from the NHTSA. But the data for sidewall defects on the ContoPro were about over a hundred. The folks who filed a complaint on the ContoPro has similar experiences as you did, 2-4 different tires went out, even when they changed all 4 with another set of ContiPros. I assume they had bad batches of them made. It is pretty un-nerving as you have experienced. I only have them since they came on my Rspec when purchased new. Regards.

I just got a 2016 Sentra SR last week friday that came with these tires on them. After 5 days of having the car i noticed a bubble on the sidewall in my front passenger side tire. I took the vehicle back to the dealership and thats when i noticed another bubble but on the back passenger side tire side wall. They said it was due to hitting a pothole or something that caused it to pinch . I did not hit any potholes myself and i refuse to pay for 2 new tires at almost 300 a tire to have put on. I already dislike these tires and will never buy them again.

Yeah I would stay away from ContiProContacts. I work at a dealership and for a while I had at least 2 cars coming in every week with these tires either blown out or sidewall bubbles forming.

I've had two Continental tires form a bubble. The first was right after I bought my car, so replacing it was free. It's out of warranty now and I just had to replace another tire with the same issue. I think I may have another one now because I'm having a minor wobble when breaking. I'll know for sure shortly, taking it in to see.
