  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis V8 2011 with 100+k miles. Warning lights of all kind turned on (esc, airbag, check engine light and many others I cannot recognize or have not seen before). RPM display went to zero but engine still idling at a stoplight. Transmission shift only maybe to second or third gear. Dealer states replacing the Controller Area Network (CAN) might resolve the problem. This is NOT cheap! $5,600 parts and labor. Any suggestions or input will be deeply appreciated. Does Hyundai offer "After Warranty Assistance"?

Is this constantly happening? or is the problem intermittent?

When it happened, parked the car, then towed to Hardin Hyundai. Been there for almost three weeks. They first replaced the battery, but error codes were still there.

In addition to my 2012 V6 Genesis, I drive a 2009 Kia Borrego V8. The Borrego was only sold in the U.S. in 2009. They were built using the same V6 and V8 power train that came in the Genesis sedans. My Borrego experienced the exact same symptoms you had. There is a TSB (Kia) that fixed my problem. Anyway, show the attached TSB to your dealer and see what they say. The TSB replaced a part in the transmission called a Mechatronic assemby. When it happened to me, I turned off the engine and after a few minutes, restarted and everything was fine...until it happened again later. The TSB said to first disconnect the TCU (transmission control unit) wiring connector, clean the contacts, and apply Stabilant 22A and test drive. If problem still exists, replace the Mechatronic unit.

You can't really "replace the CAN bus." A CAN bus is just a single wire in the car that carries a serial signal. The have many modules that are simply connected to the CAN bus, and one of those will also serve ans the bus controller. It is not typical to have a component that is solely the controller. So, maybe the dealer is suggesting that they replace the module that is the CAN bus controller (often the instrument cluster), or maybe they are suggesting that they replace every component on the CAN bus.

The first step is to ask them specifically which parts they are recommending replacement.

Next, the likely error on the CAN bus is that the wire is either shorted to ground somewhere. Or, one of the connected components failed and is latching the bus to a fixed voltage or ground. My bet is the latter.

The CAN bus will still function with one or more connected modules removed. So, I recommend that you identify each module on the CAN bus, and systematically disconnect them until the errors go away and the tach works. The only one you cannot disconnect is the component that controls the bus, so also need to figure out which is the controller module.

Thank you all for your inputs. Today Friday, Dec. 5, went to Hardin Hyundai. The manager is in contact with Hyundai. He told me that there are three possibilities what Hyundai will do:
1. Hyundai will pay for the repair.
2.Will split cause 50-50.
3. I will pay for the all the repair.
I will from them next week.
