If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hey All,

First time posting here...

I am having an issue dealing with my local genesis dealer and would like insight from anyone on here on how I should handle this. I recently noticed corrosion on the passenger rear wheel well (on the arch, behind the door) and phoned my local dealer to have this inspected and determine a path forward on a repair (corrosion warranty is 5 years as I understand it)

Upon inspection I was told this would in fact be covered, but getting to the point of having the repair completed seems to be a hassle. The service advisor has informed me that he is going back and forth with Genesis corporate on getting this repair covered, and that they are not agreeing with the cost of this repair. I was told that this would mean replacing the panel, which looking at it...I don't see any visible seams and this sounds like a massive job to do. It seems as though the dealership has been asked to quote this repair at other Genesis locations in the interest of having the repair done cheaper.

This concerns me as I want this repair to be done properly and don't want this rust coming back at a later time. I'm not really getting anywhere with the dealer, they keep telling me it's taking time and a lot of back and forth but no word on how we will proceed. I'm pretty disappointed to say the least, this seems like a pretty cut and dry case that needs to be covered under the warranty, and the fact the the repair is expensive is not something that should be preventing this from getting fixed.

Would appreciate any insight on what I do next, I am quite shocked this is happening on a 2022 vehicle and for the cost of the car, this service is not really living up to expectations.

Normally I am a very impatient person. But in this case I recommend patience. The problem did not happen overnight and fixing it won't be negatively impacted by a delay in the repair. Bear with the dealership; Speak to the service manager and tell her that you appreciate what they are doing for you and the fight they are having to endure with corporate (you want the service manager and her staff to be supportive of you and your needs and that starts with your being appreciative of her. Assuming you get a good outcome, eventually, write a good report to the general manager and DON'T cc her. If the GM is any good, she will pass it on to the service manager who won't automatically assume you did it to cozy up to her).

Agree with steveinarizona. Seems they want to do it right and not just slap some Bondo on it. Let them do the leg work for you.

I'm surprised you have this issue at all. Corrosion is not mentioned as a problem, especially after just a couple of years. As an interim fix, put duct tape over it and spray with some touch up paint and it will be hidden. Look as good as new!

I have trouble believing any a 2 year old car would have corrosion serious enough to require a panel to be replaced.

First post by a new member. Sometimes I wonder if some people post maliciously in an effort to damage the brand.

That’s a wild thought…I can assure you this is real. Here’s some evidence…

Is that all of it? No need to replace a panel to repair that. I'd rather they fix the spot than replace the panel.

It think it is a dealership issue. Dealerships (all brands) seem to prefer replacement to repair in such situations.

All I want is a repair that will last the life of the vehicle and not cause problems down the road. The other point is that I would expect this to still be covered after the repair is completed. This isn't an old car with 200k Miles, It's still a fairly new vehicle...and it wasn't necessarily cheap.

Counterpoint...

Those rust spots appear to have been grown up under the paint from unrepaired rock chips along the edge. I could easily fail a warranty claim on this as unrepaired road hazard damage instead of a factory defect as I could warranty. If the dealer offers any accomodation whatsoever, take it and feel lucky.

This is obviously a rust-belt car. So, OP, if you "want the car to last" and also want issues like this to not repeat, then inspect your paint and do your touchups on a timely basis going forward. However long "Life of the vehicle" will be, is up to you and your choices going forward.

PPF is a choice as well.

Paint shouldn’t flake off or cause this type of corrosion easily within 2 years, you would see a lot more new rusty vehicles around if this was a common thing that was dependent on if the owner fixed rock chips or not.

Not a rust belt car either, we are in western Canada and roads in our province do not get salted.

Update.

Service rep has just gotten back to me and although multiple repair facilities suggested replacing the panel, they will be sanding down / removing the rust and repainting.

Not sure how I feel about the repair, it seems genesis corporate is trying to go about this in the cheapest way possible and from my experience grinding rust away and putting bondo over it is never a long term fix, this will likely come back years down the road.

Curious what thoughts are here...quite disappointing to even have this problem.

Done right, it can look perfect. Bondo does not rust so it may be better than new. Depends on the ability of the body guy.
I got hit in the front and filler was used in a few spots. Five years later, you'd never know it was not factory perfect.

Well…the finally phoned me up and decided to fix it, now this situation has gotten far worse. I have had the vehicle with them twice now and both times have been returned my vehicle with very poor quality repair. I spoke to the service advisor today and all he said was “send me pictures” along with when I mentioned this is severely impacting the value of my vehicle and future sale to “just tell anyone who would buy it that you got a corrosion repair done” ….

Photos of the first time they returned it:

There are two issues here: (1) can they/should they have sanded down the panels instead of replacing them; and (2) the quality of the repair.

As to (1) I think it is how much material they they take down, I an a consumer so I don't know but I would think that there would be gauges that could view this.

As to (2) can you take pictures of a brand new car at the dealership for the same spot and see how different they look?
