  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I am looking at a Genesis V8 Sedan (2009 to 2011 ish)... I read and hear differing opinions on the cost of ownership.
I was previously considering a similar year Lexus. I know the reliability on the Lexus is top notch. I am going to be buying private party, so that means no warranty.
What can I expect from a V8 sedan as far as issues, things to look out for etc?

I have searched thru the forums, so Thank You for all the great info! Just wanting to see if there is anything I missed.

Thanks Much!

You still get the 5yr/60,000 mile warranty regardless of who the seller is.

I have owned 3 Lexus - 2 GS Models and an ES300. The Lexus were all Top notch, until my 2007 GS350..... It was not.

I have a 2011 Genesis which has been Flawless for me, so I just bought another 2014 R-Spec.

You can get lucky or unlucky with your purchase. So, it's kind of a crapshoot. I now own 2 Genesis and no Longer genuflect in front Lexus. I had better luck with Honda.

An 09 to 11 Genesis will cost ~1/2 as much as an 09-11 LS. Owning either under warranty costs you nothing more than consumables. 2010 Genesis b2b warranty is +1/+10,000 more than LS. After warranty expires, COO depends on your luck. Extended warranties I'm sure cost about the same... Hyundai factory extended b2b warranty is $2900 to get my 09 v8 tech to 10/110 (platinum level), in Florida. Cheaper elsewhere.

But then again all of this can be researched in about an hour.

In fact you can buy a brand new 2014 Rspec for less than the price of a 2010 LS...

If looking for a 2009-2011 Genesis V8, a 2011 is going to be the most reliable. There were some cold start problems with the early Hyundai Genesis V8 Tau engines that can cause internal engine damage (but not enough damage to immediately file a warranty claim). I would question the long term reliability of some of these early V8 engines

The Genesis V6 engine, since the same basic Lambda V6 design has been used in prior Hyundai vehicles, is pretty much the same good reliability for any of the 2009-2011 model years.

I have 126,000 on my 011 4.6 genny with tech package. No problems what so ever. Transmission service is expensive. 500.00 to 800.00 which is about the same as Mercedes. Don't skip recommended services(same as with a Lexus) and the car is extremely reliable.

One factor may be the cost of routine maintenance. If you have the dealer do it, the Lexus is quite expensive.

Can't comment on the Genesis - perhaps someone who has owned both can provide some insight?

I've owned both. 2006 GS300 AWD & 20011 GS350 AWD. Even if you do just the factory recommended service and NOT the dealer recommended service it's still gonna drain your wallet A LOT faster than the Genesis. It may be different with the 2014's because I believe the use synthetic oil now. But shop labor rates are higher so factor that to your purchase. One example is I was charged $78 for windshield wipers!!!! I told them to take them off as I wasn't paying that when I could buy them & install them myself for over half that. The manager threw them in "as a courtesy".

I don't know why everyone assumes they have to do basic maintenance (oil changes, air filter changes, wiper blades, etc) at a dealer. These are simple things that can be done by yourself or an independent shop with more reasonable labor rates. The OP may be the kind of person who is willing to do these basic things himself.

This discussion is potentially flawed, since we don't know what Lexus he is considering. A used LS460 is going to cost about twice the price of a used Genesis for same model year, so there is something off-base here. He might be considering a Lexus ES350 or a GS, so hard to answer the question.

got to agree. lexus ls to equus would be a more appropriate comparison. the genesis would be more equivalent to the gs.

i owned a 2006 gs awd. i actually like the performance of the 2012 genesis v6 more and it takes regular gas and i'm getting better mpg. over 100k miles the cost difference could be 1,500.
