  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Could Start-up knocking noise be from Timing Chain Tensioner??

If the mechanic has to change the tensioners then he may as well change the timing chains, guides and oil pump as well. Usually, the timing chains stretches when the tensioners are bad. The only way your mechanic will know if the chains are good or bad is when the front timing covers are removed, which is the hardest part of the job.

Just do all the timing chain parts(tensioners, guides, chain, oil pump) in one go.

I would check your owners manual first before using the 10w-30 oil. Too thick of an oil weight can cause more problems down the line like rod bearing wear.
well he's giving me the more reasonable option now, because i know changing out that chain and the tensioners, etc. is going to be expensive. I will monitor it up until my next oil change then see what i need to do from there. You guys give very good information!!!! Thanks so much

Owner's manual allows for oil weights from 5W-30 all the way up to 20W-50.

cool beans! i will hop on it asap, this is my baby!! its such a freakin project tho! lol

If it is a quick rattle that goes away in a few seconds or less then yes it is almost certainly the chain tensioner. It relies on oil pressure to hold the chain tight, so when you first start it the timing chain can flop around somewhat until it is brought up to tension by oil pressure building in the tensioner.

I wouldn't worry about it unless the sound is particularly loud or it continues past several seconds. if it does, it could indicate a problem with the chain guides or other issues.

Even my 2015 V6 with 7,500 miles has a very quick rattle when starting from the chain.
Thanks so much for this answer. I've had one mechanic telling me I needed to rebuild the engine soon and another suggesting motor mounts. Gives me a little peace of mind, just bought this car a few months ago.

Sorry, I meant to update with results from dealer...
I had called dealer mgt and left a detailed message. He actually returned my call and I left the car at their shop again hoping to get it looked at again. The next day the service guy called to say that manager and he went out first thing with coffee in hand to listen to cold startup. They were amazed, or so they said, at the noise and under warranty fixed the car. I have happy to report that all is week with my Hyundai to this day. The timing Chain guides were the problem. Thanks to all who replied to this thread and helped me think through this situation!!!!!
First time owner of a 2010 3.6 gen. I'm having same start up rattle noise then it goes away in seconds. I hate the sound and afraid it's going to get real expensive to fix. I feel like I need to sell it. Was this a major cost to fox or?
