  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So I purchased Hyundai Genesis 16 from a local hyundai dealership about 4 months ago, it was a CPO with 14k miles on it so still under factory warranty.

I haven't had any passengers in the back seat until the other day, and the left side rear passenger seatbelt has a gash almost halfway through it, like it got cut by a knife. Now, everything else has been fine with car, no issues what so ever in 4months.

So my question is will this fix be covered under warranty, I am really surprised it even passed the inspection because if it was fastened and the car collided head on that seat belt would rip very easily.

Will be calling tomorrow to find out if it's under warranty to be fixed, i would imagine so but any info is appreciated.

That's tricky, since a slashed seat belt is obviously not a defect in the manufacturing and I don't think Hyundai Motor America will reimburse the dealer for a warranty repair. Whether or not you can convince the dealer that it was like that when purchased, I have no idea. After 4 months, that is tough one.

Many have reported that dealers who sell the CPO designation do not really do a real inspection of the car, and rely on the customer to tell them if something is broken. But it depends on the dealer.

Be prepared to negotiate some kind of deal where they repair it at their cost, and not list price of the part and inflated labor rate.

Yeah, makes sense, I will see what they say tomorrow.

Thank for the reply

See your sales guy/gal. Let them (and the sales mgr) handle it with the service dept. It shouldn't be a big deal.

Yeah, this would be considered a "wear item" by Hyundai. Definitely follow-up with Sales, as the dealer *might* pay for its replacement.

I went through the same thing recently. I bought a CPO and when I got home I realized that the map pocket on the back of the passenger seat was torn. I contacted the dealer and they ended up replacing it for me free of charge, I think it may have been under warranty. They provide you with a checklist for the CPO certification, there is an item called "Seat belt condition", if they checked off that it "meets standards" than you can argue that they didn't do a thorough inspection (that's what I did), especially on a safety item, and if that item was not correct than how did it pass the CPO certification?

Thanks for the feedback guys, I am taking it in tomorrow for a maintenance check up, i didn't mention the seat belt over the phone but will show them tomorrow. I actually checked it again today and the slash is not nearly as bad as I described it, maybe an inch or less but it's frayed so it looks worse then it is. If they can't replace it I feel like a superglue job would suffice tbh.

Still is unsafe. While it might hold in an accident, the belts should be solid with only minor fraying (preferably none).
