two rocks hit my windshield and cracked it today

instead of paying about $1,000 for my windshield, are there any good repair kits for cracked windshields?

If it is cracked, it can't be fixed, only replaced.

If it is chipped, no larger than a quarter coin, it can be repaired. Glass places inject a something into the chip, then they let it cure (either) by heating the spot from the inside of the car, or by shining a special light on the spot. They then take a blade and shave off any extra that is higher than the glass around it. In fixing the chip, if you look close, you will still see the chip, but you will have to look close.

Talk with a glass place first. If they can fix the chip, (about $50. each chip in this area) I would not report it to my insurance company as it will count against you as claim. If it is a crack, too wide to fix, and if you have windshield insurance, go ahead and have your insurance pay for it. That is why you have insurance.

Also note that the Stock Genesis windshield is going to cost a lot more than an aftermarket windshield. Your insurance company will probably insist on using an aftermarket windshield, and in this case, only if you want the stock windshield, you can make a deal with the glass company that you will pay them the difference between an aftermarket and stock windshield.

If you pay for it yourself, (no insurance) you may want an American made aftermarket windshield, as it probably has more chip and crack resistance.

Lastly, your Hyundai dealer can probably put you in touch with glass companies that they use, in case you don't want to take a chance on a company you never heard or.

Good Luck

A few months back I got a dime sized star chip. I used a permatex window kit from an auto parts store and so far it has prevented it from spreading. You may want to give it a try if applicable.

The Genesis windshields have a special sound-proofing lamination layer inside and apparently costs about $850 based on a previous poster (IIRC). Not sure if you can even get an after-market version for the Genesis that is less expensive. This is becoming the trend in higher end cars, and even some 2010 Ford Taurus models have this type of windshield.

Cracked windshields are covered under the comprehensive insurance you probably have. I am guessing that your deductible is $1000 for comprehensive? That seems really high for comprehensive. There is less than $35 difference for me between a $1000 deductible and a $50 deductible. Here in PA, cracked windshields are a way of life. Lots of stones on the roads.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
$15-$20 kit at your local autoparts store. I got one the had 4 suction cups on it with the injector that screws into the center at Autozone. Pushes the solution into the layers of the windshield. Worked great on the chipped looking spots. The instructions had a technique for cracks. Not sure if I would trust it to fill a crack.

On many policies, the deductble is waived for glass.

This is correct!!! Not understanding the dilemma in a cracked windshield.

Completely agree! I've never paid for glass repair/replacement. It's a no deductable for most I believe.

I had a cinder block come from the back of a pickup truck fly thru my winshield. The insurance company had a small comprehensive deductible and replaced the windshield. My auto body guy said that thier are no aftermarket windshields avialable yet for the Genesis due to low volume. Everything is just like new- have no worries.

for the repairs to my vehicle, which included this, the cost was $1049.18. this was for what i believe is the PPG Soundwave.

I had a rock hit my windshield three weeks after I got my Genesis; it had put about a quarter-sized crack in about the center. I contacted my insurance company; a Safelite glass repair guy showed up that afternoon and did the repair. It looks pretty good, with just maybe a very faint line that shows up if the light hits it just right.

I asked the Safelight guy how big a crack has to be before it's considered non repairable. He said if it's bigger than a dollar bill, it's probably a good idea to replace the windshield.

Keep in mind replacing a windshield on a Genesis is a big deal, as you have to reinstall the rear-view mirror and rain sensors (among other things) as well as replace the windshield itself.

Well, I got nailed by a metal valve stem cover this morning...thank goodness it didnt hit the paint!

My last car, I had 5 windshields installed without a dime coming from my pocket. They even came to my place of work to install them.

I traveled 200+ miles a day, from Birmingham to Decatur, for 3 years and cracked windshields were normal for me...and my insurance company! :)

Don't panic (yet).

In my state, Florida, the insurance were companies are required to replace your damaged windshield at no cost to you.

I believe this is considered a safety item and somehow this clause got written into the law.

I had a crack in my car's windshield a decade ago, and was amazed that the glazier replaced it at no cost to me.

I have no idea if that's still the law in Florida, but its probably worth a call to your insurance carrier, and to several automobile glass stores to see if they know of this provision.

Couldn't hoit!:

I'm thinking that the OP opted out of windshield replacement coverage? I know in MA all insurance companies cover glass 100%. I would think NJ is the same though.

The genesis also has speed sensitive windshield wipers that have a camera mounted behind the mirror. I was told by my glass place this also adds to the replacement cost. The Genesis has only been out a couple years and has pretty low volume so it is doubtful that there would be aftermarket replacements.

Glass companies can usually waive the deductible by saving money on the cost of the windshield. However, in cases where there aren't lower cost aftermarket options available, where they have to buy the factory windshield, they can't make this savings and therefore can't waive the deductible. I learned this after calling several places to replace a rarer high end Volvo windshield with speed sensitive wipers...like the Genesis.

...which means that some other "lucky" individuals paid for those 5 windshield. I'll bet they were all as happy as you were 'bout that situation.

1 windshield? I'm OK with that. That's how insurance works.

2 windshields? OK, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

But 5 windshields? Now it's getting less like insurance and more like welfare, especially if your premiums have not changed. I'm assuming your insurance company increased your rates?

Not a dime ;) and the car was sold last year.

They were aware of my driving situation (200+ miles a day) and adjusted my insurance accordingly when I purchased the car. Most of the time insurance companies ask you "how far is your drive to and from work" and most will tell them...ohhh...2-3 miles...hoping for a lesser price. Well, I didnt, I told them the truth, my price was definitely higher than it should have been. But in reality, whats $10 a month??

I would let my windsheilds go until I had 3 or 4 cracks that started to spider off. I would call State farm, tell them about it, and within a day Safelite Autoglass would be in my parking lot at work changing them out.

Now, the reason for all the cracked glass is simple. I would get up and leave the house by 3:30 in the morning. Its I-65 the whole way and I would find myself behind 3 18-wheelers cruising at speeds well into the 90's (OWNER operators=no speed limiters) every morning. With a good ins. policy...I didnt care! As far as paint damage...well, I just ate that. HA!

In a different case, one of these trucks lost its re-tread and it slapped my front end dead nuts in the center. Crushed my hood, grill, lower valance, and cracked my radiator. My deductible was $250 during the years that I spent traveling to work. I paid the $250, Toyota got the car and I cruised around in a Lexus ES350 from Enterprise for a total of $64 for 2 weeks.

In essence, my motive is that you get what you pay for.

Either way you look at it, I pay State Farm very well for their service, and they hold to their end of the deal rather well. :D

Sounds like a square deal to me. Your driving situation certainly explains 5 windshields, and your honesty with State Farm probably means that an equitable premium was charged for your risk exposure, thus "not a dime" is a fair and square deal.

I can sympathize about the 18-wheelers. The one windshield I've had cracked and replaced by my insurance company (not a dime out of my pocket either) was from a opposite direction big-rig on HWY-45 (2-lane undivided) while I was going from Pensacola, FL to Meridian, MS in my brand new 1984 Saab 900 Turbo "lieutenant-mobile". Being a "rich" 2nd Lieutenant who had just mortgaged himself to the hilt with a $0 down Saab, I was happy that my insurance covered the windshield.

I got a crack in my windshield a few weeks ago, started in the upper left side, now it's looks like a lightening bolt going all the way down to nearly the windshield wipers. I have guys from safelite autoglass coming this weekend, they will probably have to replace the windshield because i don't think it's able to be fixed. Its my first cracked windshield, my 2002 Acura RL didn't give me any issues along those lines
