If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My wife's 2009 4.6 is coming up on 100k and out of warranty. We have had a couple issues (ABS brake switch) but on whole the car has weathered well. We don't want to spend $$ on a new car payment and purchase so the question becomes

What is the reliability factor for the Genesis over 100K? And if you were thinking of keeping it what would you ask the mechanic to look at before making that decision?

Thanks for your advice.

My 2011 4.6 with tech pkg.(purchased new Sept. 2010) has 176,000 miles on it and still runs like new. I have had all maintenance performed per manual (ie fuel filter and fuel tank air filter) plus service the transmission about every 70k miles. Front brakes lasted to 130k and rear to 165k. I plan on keeping my Genesis to over 220,000 miles, maybe 300,000 miles.

Thanks. I checked NTSB and other sites. Few issue which would leave her stranded so to speak. She had some stalling at about 85k..they put it through every test imaginable...turned out to be the fuel injector needed cleaning from little particles. problem fixed.

Wow. Front brakes lasted to 130k? I can't even imagine that. Do you coast to all stops?

He lives in Alaska. Half the year the roads are coated with ice so the wheels don't turn when he hits the brakes. :D

It is likely apples and oranges, but I try to run my vehicles to 200,000 miles. I have found with Fords and a Celebrity that there are some repairs needed between 100,000 and 150,000 miles, and then they keep running with little else. The repairs have amounted to less than $1500 per vehicle----------less than a couple of months payments on something new.

Time will tell if that holds for the Genesis.

Alaskaman the OP lives in San Diego and I live in Athens GA. The OP name does make it seem that he lives in Alaska. Many people have gone to around 100k with the original brakes on the Genesis 4.6 model. There are several threads about it.

Righto. We divide time between here and there. The Genesis is not an Alaska vehicle we take the 4Runner.

I spoke with a couple service guys who don't see many of them come in after 100k which either means they are reliable or they auction off to other parts ofthe world. I am going to take it to the dealer Monday and have them go through it...compression and filters/hoses etc. Wife is ok with keeping it just does not want to be stranded on the side of the highway.

My wife just got back from a 650 mile round trip in our Genesis. She went alone but we have AAA if needed. It is very reliable still at 176,000 miles; no oil use, no strange noises, no rattles or squeaks. A thorough checkup is a good idea, but they may try to sell you a new car too.

Any of your 1st Generation Genesis had any oil issues, high use, leak etc? Taking it in to dealer here in San Diego on Tuesday. Doing services up to 100k all fluids all hoses brakes and electrics. Putting on new shoes (killer deal at discount tire) for the new Continentals Contact and seeing if anything looks amiss We are at 98k so hopefully if they look closely they will get a real good look at any issues.

From what I have learned is the Genesis is reliable next 100,000 miles (and more). She loves the car sure would like to have a new one but no payment and perhaps repairs is better than a $450.00 monthly she says.

Powertrain is a bullet proof. The only concern would be electronics down the road.

Wife is ok with keeping the vehicle. Put Pirelli Net Zero's on today at Discount Tires nice grip...going in for 97K service (about $450). Got a surprise - spark plug service about the same price. $410.00.

Those are some spark plugs. Any idea why so pricey?

Not and unusual price for spark plugs for newer car. The plugs are NGK laser iridium plugs plus labor of about 2 hours. My son's car(Mercedes E500) had to have new spark plugs and wires, 16 plugs and wires=$600.00 plus labor. At 97k miles If you have not replaced the fuel filter and fuel tank air filter then IMO you should have that service done. Also, full transmission service including replacing the transmission pan/filter, total cost of about 700.00.

Thanks. We will do the fuel tank air filter and fuel filter. Transmission is a sealed system according to dealer never to be opened. We are also doing coolant rear brakes and the multi inspections they require.

Dealer service department is full of BS on the transmission. It needs to be serviced. I have mine done every 60k or so and every time it has metal particles around the magnets in the fluid pan. A new transmission for these cars is over 5000.00. The manufacturer of the transmission in the 4.6 Geneses recommends service every 80,000km to 120,000km. Here is the the link to the ZF transmission mfg. information. note bottom of page 1 also note that this tranny is also in Bentleys. http://www.zf.com/media/media/document/brands_3/service_information/sitematrix~1/transmission/cars_4/englisch_3/modelluebergreifend_1/ZP_SI_Oelwechselkit_EN.pdf

That is true. However, if the dealer says not to change the fluid because the transmission is sealed, that is a "tell" that they probably don't have mechanics that know how to do it correctly, so I would take it elsewhere.

So the obvious question becomes then WHO in the San Diego area knows how to accomplish this?

At the dealer. They are checking for oil (none on our garage floor) however when she took it in the level was quite low two weeks ago to Valvoline and there was a knocking on start up which after the change is no longer there. I assume at 100k we use a touch more oil but having them check seals (metal on drain) to see what they see. 90K service $487.00. We've used Poway Hyundai and always been happy with them. Chatted about the transmission and clearly they were not in the habit of changing the fluid.
