If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

For 2012-2013 Rspec sedan: B/C so many of you have been asking, I made another batch of air intakes. I made small improvements for better fitment. Recent customer wanted a flat black finish. This got me involved with a local powder coating business, and now I can powder coat anything almost any color.

If you are interested, I have 4 more available and can powder coat any color.

$350 non painted (aluminum silver)
$375 powder coated any color
As posted in earlier thread: 15whp gains on dyno! Nice V8 sound during heavy throttle. No changes to sound under normal driving.

Includes shipping, K&N air filter, coupler, clamps....everything for direct bolt on. No warning lights on dash.

Does the intake not allow the engine cover to fit? I think you explained this in a prior thread, but I forget. Thanks!

Driv - check out what this guy did with a Rubbermaid trash can for a DIY heat shield. Brings ghetto fab in to a whole new level but have to admire the creativity.

This one caught my eye as well - half way down the page check out the heat shield.

StangKiller

Say what you will (it is ghetto fab) but will done and well thought out I would say. That is just about how a good amount of the lower end aftermarket gets started! A good idea, initial prototype, testing, revised prototype, testing, and final product (sometimes).

I would like to see an AEM "style" Cold Air Intake for the 3.8 Genesis Sedan.

Why does a 90 aluminum elbow, kn filter, 2 couplers and 3 clamps cost 350$?? Yes you had to weld that small breather pipe on the side of the intake but damn. Hardware alone is not more then 100$. If you paid someone to weld that small tube on the side then add 25$ maybe.

Yea you have to make a profit but 350$ is ridiculous lol

I would of used a Amsoil dry flow filter instead of an oily KN

I did the trash can turned heat shield tonight on my 3.8. I'm not crafty by any means but I think it turned out well. Will post pics in the AM.

Any underhood heat shields around the K and N available? Or CAI box and extended cold air feed past the front cage? Looks great, sounds great, like the powder coat.

Homemade heat shield.

Hi guys, I get so busy and forget to come back to this thread. I like the effort of the Ghetto heat shields. We need all the help we can get.

As for my price being expensive, I am not trying to make a killing. Just trying to help the forum members with a needed upgrade that's simple. If it was so easy, everyone would do it. My labor rates (build/research/dyno tested) are why my part fit perfect and snug with no rattle or ghetto measurements. Its a lot more than just welding a small part. I make a cut or bend then weld it for proper fitment. Then weld the breather pipe at an angle for best fit. Now with Powdercoating, they are coming out great. $25-$30 shipping included in price. PayPal 4% fees also come out. Add my tax to buy and build, there you go. I am just a 1 guy show....not a big volume guy. Really thought some vendor would have stepped up by now. I might start researching heat shields, but my DIY sales have caught attention of mods and I can't sell any more on this forum. I understand. :grouphug:

Oh, and yes it fits with engine cover on. Pic was just to see fitment.

I understand your economics totally. If you're producing something low volume, high quality, of course it's going to have a large mark up. Otherwise, it's not worth it from a effort/profit perspective.

People are asking why you're charging $350 for a simple pipe, clamps, and filter but they neglect to account for the cost of your time to assemble, test, and powder coat.

If you're having to mostly hand make each of these then you have to factor in how much your hourly labor is worth to produce such a highly customized product. The average American makes 20-25 dollars an hour, so you do the math for something like this.

For the record, if there was a market for the 3.8 GDI I totally would've bought an intake that was pre-fabricated. Given the circumstances, I was forced to innovate.

Bespoke parts are expensive. I just got mine in the post. Black powder coat. Quality looks good. Won't have a chance to install it for a while

I used spectre parts to build the intake in my last LS powered vehicle and it came out great. $350 is quite steep when it can be built for way less and with a dry filter instead of k&n. Full kits from reputable companies cost the same price

Glad you made a good part. Nothing magic about my cost or quality. I have put a lot of time into a solid quality part with documented performance gains and longevity. I use high quality aluminum, silicone sleeves, clamps, & custom welds for best fitment. Cheaper materials are not an interest to me. I can use any filter of choice or reduce $50 and let customer use their own filter. 2 years no complaints. As you mentioned, my cost is right in-line with reputable vendors, except, they are not making any for our cars yet. This is why I started making kits in the first place. I hope to see vendors start making some any day so we all can benefit. Again, just hear to help forum members with a needed part that is not yet available in retail market. All the power to you and others who can DIY. ;)

How difficult us it to install? Or do i need to take it to a mechanic... And what type of gains would i notice/see?

You can install it. Any air intake you choose will require removal of current air box. It's snapped in place mostly with maybe 1 or two screws requiring a screwdriver. I am not a mechanic and I have unsnapped and installed new intakes in about 20 minutes. Performance gains are documented in this forum. I posted a video of back to back dyno runs before and after install and got 15 rear wheel horsepower with just my intake. Thought this was pretty amazing!:)
