  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I would appreciate any thoughts/concerns from Sport owners who have noticed any marks/water spots/discolouration on any of the dark chrome areas of the car (i.e. door handles, window beltline moulding, bumper insert, front grille). I have noticed such marks on two separate Sport demos and I was not able to rub off them off. The affected dark chrome areas seemed to be permanently discoloured.

I haven't noticed any of it permanently marked, but it definitely picks up finger prints easy on the handles anyway. I will take a closer look at the grill next time I wash the car as that would definitely be the worst.

agreed, they definitely show water marks and fingerprints a lot easier than normal chrome. I've found that you can't just rub it off either, it appears to hold the oils, but a very light application of liquid car polish does remove the water spots and finger prints easily.

i, and my wife, noticed water spotting during the test drive. looked terrible. after i took delivery, i did a full detail with sealant and wax and have not noticed the same water spotting. the water just beads up and slides off. i suppose there will be some finger prints over time, but i haven't noticed anything to be concerned about even though i made a note of this during the test drive.

It appears there could be a problem with the dark chrome itself. Here is a link to a discussion in the G80 forum where people have had their's replaced under warranty. It is one of the concerns I have on my list for considering the G80 Sport.

G80 Sport - discoloration of the dark chrome trim around the doors

Same problem here. When I took delivery of my G80 Sport all the window trim on the right side had what appeared to be water spots. Brought to dealer's attention as I was inspecting the car at delivery. They took it to the body shop and attempted to remove the spots to no avail. They ordered new trim on the spot and it was installed 2 weeks later. No issues since. I took delivery on the car 03/29/18 and the build date 05/29/17. The dealer and I both suspect the spotting and discoloration occurred in transit or at the port. Possibly something corrosive.

PS - 7 months later no reoccurrence on the replacement trim and no discoloration on any of the other trim.

That discoloration on the dark chrome of that G80 is brutal. I definitely don't have anything like that so far. The water spots and finger prints I have had so far easily wipe off with a microfiber towel.

The winter will be more telling as I almost exclusively hand wash in my driveway over the summer months including drying the car where in the winter I typically use touchless washes which only do a an okay job of drying and wand wash where it isn't dried at all. In the spring I usually have to do a full detail to restore some of the neglect from the long winter. The dark chrome on my Jeep is similar and in the spring I just use some instant detailer sprayed on a microfiber towel to get rid of any spots from the winter. Here is a pic of the Jeep so you can kind of see the similar chrome on the front:

Badass rig setup Edm. Off topic, but do you get shit from police with no front plate? I thought that was a big no no in Canada.

I wonder if clay would remove these spots. It sounds like it's embedded within the Chrome itself though, not at a surface level.

No front plates required in Alberta. Most provinces require it though. I hope they never change that though as all cars look so much better without a front plate. :) And thanks.

MY dealer tried clay, rubbing compound, etc. No luck. It is definitely not on the surface.

I think water spots are common, if not inherent, on all matte/dark chrome trims--my X3 M40 showed water spots from day 1, unless you wipe off right after car wash.

Many thanks for your insights and experiences. It is something I will definitely look for when I take delivery of my G70.

On mine too ... both sides, but just the ‘hockey stick’ piece around the rear window. Looks mottled with rainbow colours, but only noticeable in certain lights. I didn't even notice, the guys that were installing a ceramic coating had to point it out. Will have to contact Genesis to get replaced.

I have had some of my trim replaced it seemed like the top layer was peeling off

I have Mallorca blue. It is unbearable to see the car if you don't dry after a wash. Water marks everywhere, dark Chrome included. I had to wash and dry the car again the day after. Lazy don't pay off. The car looked better dirty :) no problems with any dark Chrome staining.

Wonder if you could apply something...after a proper wash and dry. Something that will prevent water marks...or even finger prints on the handles. Something that doesn’t need to be applied after every wash.

Pretty sure the car was already waxed before delivery to me. I saw white residue on the sat fin and water already beads. I have to wash today and i might as well wax. Winter is coming. I can't imagine any coating that will help with/eliminate water spots. Maybe if we washed our cars in 100% distilled water...

What about wiping some RainX on those parts or something. Don't want to ruin the finish with any harsh stuff.

I've stopped using rainx because I hate the way it wears out on my windshield. Maybe I applied it wrong.. Anyways I swore off that stuff years ago. I have a 10 year old bottle of that stuff left haha. Anyways will try wax and not wipe a door handle to see and report back. I personally don't think there is a lazy way out... Dry your vehicle after wash.

Oh...I always dry after a wash. I am more worried about rain hitting the car...then leaving wet marks on the dark chrome. That's why I was say...wash + dry...and then apply a preventative (hopefully not every time).

Last thing you want to do is to polish those parts every time the car sees any sort of precipitation...LOL.
