  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Dark Chrome Exterior Accents

Oh...I always dry after a wash. I am more worried about rain hitting the car...then leaving wet marks on the dark chrome. That's why I was say...wash + dry...and then apply a preventative (hopefully not every time).

Last thing you want to do is to polish those parts every time the car sees any sort of precipitation...LOL.

rain is a lot more pure water than tap water, spots aren't likely to be an issue with rain, tap water is filtered, chlorinated, and contains a lot of calcium, magnesium, and lime which is what gives it the hardness and leaves water spots.

rain for the most part doesn't do this, while it does contain particulate matter from pollution, it isn't classified as "hard" water. water tests I have done at my home show my city water has a hardness rating of > 10.5 (very hard) and rain water has a rating of < 1.

we do a series of water tests every year as we have a grey water reclamation system and a tankless water heater, and both require the hardness to be below 1 for their warranties, so we soften and filter to get it below 1.

I find spotting after a car wash, i am definitly not a huge fan of the dark chrome ( although better than normal chrome ), i would much rather black trim

that's one of the reasons I wrapped mine in black vinyl, the dark chrome (to me) didn't blend with the black mirrors and "B" pillar trim

Damn.. do you have a pic ? I wrapped my mirrors and am thinking about the trim, how does it look ?? Im just worried about the door handles sticking out and not matching well

I wanted to wrap my trim as well, problem is you can't do the grill or the door handles (and I don't think the door handles would look good) so I didn't do any of it. I may still do just around the windows, but the lower part of the mirrors looks like it would be difficult to do as well.

I did my door handles..

so I got a little bored yesterday..

I'll get a picture of the handles in a bit.. I did them several weeks after I did the trim and never took a picture.

So you left the grill?

It definitely looks good around the windows. For the handles did you just do the small strip of chrome or the entire handles? I personally think full handles would make it look like one of those cars with black plastic handles so it would look cheap. I wouldn't mind the strip of chrome as I had that on my 5 series as well. But our handles are completely chrome on the G70 so personally not a fan. Plus doing that little button probably wouldn't last.

I have a Sport, so the mirrors are black from the factory.. also the grille has copper accents so I didn't mess with it, as the copper and dark chrome grille match the wheels and the lower dark chrome strip at the bottom of the car.

but the upper area of the doors was a mish-mash of colors, white, black, dark chrome. so I blended it all to black, so the car has more of a consistent look and "pops" a little better. IMO. .

I did something very different on the handles. one of a kind.

lol, I just realized this was a G70 thread.. I thought it was a G80 thread.. oops.

There is a lot of that here lol

But in this case, it still relates since both vehicles have the same dark chrome accents.

I do like the look of your handles but I would be really concerned about how that would last. I would be worried every time I pulled on the handle.

meh if It lasts a year that's fine, it's vinyl so it can be redone or removed. but in 4 months no issues so far.

I like it. Looks really solid.

Now if there was a good way to do the grille...

Maybe at some point Genesis will have lots of OEM aftermarket parts similar to BMW where you can order different kidney grills in say flat or gloss black from from the dealer and for a fairly reasonable price. Granted our grill is huge so it wouldn't be cheap, but it would be nice to have the option to change.

14 months now. No issues.

agreed, they definitely show water marks and fingerprints a lot easier than normal chrome. I've found that you can't just rub it off either, it appears to hold the oils, but a very light application of liquid car polish does remove the water spots and finger prints easily.
This! I thought mine was delamination because I had some dark spots and weird blemishes. I tried wet rags to no avail. So, I tried some spray wax detailer and bam! Good as new.
