Dealer says I need a new engine

Very early at this point because they just let me know they are gathering up the paperwork to submit to HPP. Dealership has always done the oil changes etc so I feel good the warranty will treat me right. Anyone else out there have to deal with this? Will this hurt the value of my car later down the road if I decide to trade in or sell to private party? Do they normally give a warranty on the new engine...well, I do not know if it will be "new" or rebuild just yet. I plan on keeping everyone posted as I think this will make or break what I think of the brand. I imagine I will be without a car for several weeks. Hopefully they let me keep this loaner even though it is an Elantra. Yes, I am disappointed but glad I bought the warranty (Hyundai Platinum Plan) Thanks for any input on what to expect.
 
  • My recollection of reading posts on this forum over the years is that there have been a fair number of V8's replaced under warranty by Hyundai.
  • Sounds like you purchased the 2011 used, since the 100K mile - 10 year powertrain warranty is available to original owners without the HPP extended warranty.
  • Some people might think your car is worth less with a new engine, but personally I would think it would be worth more.
  • The warranty on the new/rebuilt engine will expire the same time as your original HPP warranty would expire (you don't get an additional 10 years or 100K miles). The only exception is that would be some minimum warranty (maybe 90 days, maybe more), if your HPP warranty ran out right after the repair.
 
Thanks Mark. They are doing a tear down so the inspector can come out Monday and look it over. I will have to pay for the tear down if he does not approve which I think is $360. They advised it would be a brand new engine since it was CPO and I bought the HPP. He said he thought it would be a 12K mileage warranty but not really sure. All of my records done at the dealership...I always do this when under any warranty and I would suggest everyone else be doing this as well. I will update early next week.

Since your car was a CPO, and the extended powertrain warranty is restored even though you are not original owner, I would not think the HPP warranty comes into play in this situation.

just wanted to share that one of our guys had a 2010 Genesis 3.8 Sedan that was purchased as a CPO and he extended the warranty via Hyundai's Platinum warranty. His 3.8 engine failed with 65K and it failed at start up! The warranty covered the repair which consisted of short block and a new cylinder heads and valve train and was just under 10K to be exact it was $9,700. He had talked to the local Hyundai district rep and was told that Hyundai has a problem with metal shavings in the oil, it turns out that the engine block castings are too soft and are shaving under normal use, causing complete engine failure. The dealer tech that did the work told our guy that he personally has done three other 3.8 rebuilds two sedans and one coupe due to this problem.

That is interesting, as there have been very few reports on this forum of engine failure, or even serious problems, on the Genesis 3.8 V6. There have some reported problems with the early 4.6 and early 5.0 V8's.
 
At 196,000 miles on my 4.6 V8, the engine is still running like new. I often wonder what was neglected when an engine fails, especially when the car is purchased used. That said some engines fail due to a manufacturing defect that does not show up for thousands of miles. I had a 1989 Mazda 929 engine fail at about 6000 miles.

Ah the 929. That was a very underrated car (failing engine notwithstanding).

The 2011 is definitely the best Hyundai Tau V8 that has been made so far. By that time they corrected the problems with the early ones, and did not have to worry about the 2012+ 5.0 GDI problems or problems with 2012 5.0 piston rings not seating properly and using oil.

I just don't recall very many people complaining about the Lambda V6 on this forum, maybe because that engine has been around since before the Genesis in various versions and was not brand new like the Tau V8 was in 2009.

I agree about used cars. Ever since I graduated college, I have only bought new because I feared that the main reason people trade-in cars is when something starts going wrong with them. Even those who just want a new car every 2-3 years and turn in the cars when the lease is up (not because there is something wrong with it), are usually the ones who say synthetic oil is not worth the extra money because they are just leasing. But even besides motor oil, I just think someone is more likely to abuse an engine on a car they are leasing and not planning on buying it at end of lease.

Piston rod and bearings bad and they found metal shavings in the oil pan and oil filter. Very pleased this was a no hassle issue and says a lot about the warranty and brand staying by the word in my opinion. :D The warranty company is looking for a long block but having trouble finding one so it may be a new short block. It will be all new parts. I will go ahead and get the plugs and belts changed since he will be under the hood and I was approaching 100K mi in about 2 months with the travel I do. The mechanic spent about 5 minutes with me showing what he will be doing and what was going bad (he was working installing a new short block on one of the 4 cylinder Hyundai's. . He did say he has seen very few 4.6's in for new engines. In fact, I was only the second one he has ever seen. I bought the car CPO with 26K miles on it... No idea if the previous person abused it or just luck of the draw. He says these bearings can last 20 years or 2 years..

Again, I cannot be more pleased with Genesis brand and standing behind their product

I guess I will need to inquire if this new short block is the same as OEM or not. You mentioned earlier that maybe the engine block castings are too soft and I wonder if that was the case with my 4.6... Though, you were referencing 3.8.
 
I have a 2011 3.8,
Engine and transmission changed at 56,000 miles under warranty.
I bought the car used and was told that the engine and transmission had been replaced.
Seemed to me that by 2015, the engine they put in would have had any problems corrected that caused the end/trans to fail being they had from 2010 to 2015 to correct issues.
I figured, hey, I have a brand new engine and transmission, I'll take it to the dealers for every service/oil change, use synthetic oil, chances are really good that I'll be safe and, oh yeh, I won't drive the crap out of it. Fast, yes, hard, no.
 
Glad you got it fixed.
I had to have my '12 5.0 replaced due to failure. But mine was the oil level got too low and no warnings were ever given, no low oil level or oil pressure lights. Matter of fact, as the engine was knocking like crazy, eating itself, there still were no warning lights.
Dealer replaced it under warranty. They actually took it as a trade in on a '15 5.0 while they were waiting on the new motor to show up. Saw it a few weeks later sitting on their lot for sale. .
 
I am still dumbfounded at the amount of money a new short block and install cost for this motor. Not even going to mention the amount on this forum but Hyundai lost their ass on this vehicle since I have owned it. I think if the dealership was smart, they would offer me the option of credit toward a new vehicle vs sinking a bunch of money in a 5 year old vehicle being so close to the 100K mi warranty with a new engine. Guess I shouldn't complain because it worked out for me.

All parts finally came in last week and they are assembling the short block. I guess they do not ship the short block to dealership already assembled?
Getting plugs and belts replaced. Might as well have the transmission serviced if they can do that?...read in owners manual the transmission is sealed lifetime...you all remember the Mercedes models that had sealed transmissions a while back??? Well, they no longer have "sealed" transmissons. Maybe they can somehow service it

It's not exactly sealed, but no drain plug at the bottom, and they discourage owners from attempting to change the fluid themselves. The 2009-2011 Genesis V8 uses a 6-speed ZF transmission, used in many different brands including BMW. Starting in 2012, the Genesis uses a Hyundai 8-speeed transmission.
 
Picked up car today from the dealership. A couple of comments:

1. Car was washed/detailed and looked great!

2. Very surprised to see the engine cover etc was not cleaned or at least the top of the motor wiped down. Not a good presentation. I have lots of dust on the top of motor. So, I will take my shop vac and go over it on my own I guess

3. I use the netting in my trunk to hold the smaller items I do not want sliding around. I opened my trunk and looks like a dog has been back there. Netting completely removed and ALL of my items are scattered in the trunk. BS in my opinion.

3. Most importantly, car driving good until I pull in driveway and the check engine light comes on. So, I will take it back tomorrow hoping it is just a sensor that maybe got overlooked during re-assembly?. They told me the light came on Friday but they turned it off and thought it had been driven enough miles to not trip anything else.

I am going to give it a little more time, but I may need to start car shopping soon

That sucks for multiple reasons. I hope it's something minor.
