  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My 3-year old Genesis 3.8 has 25,000 miles on it. (It is a 2013 that was bought new in 9/2014).

I just got back from the dealer for snow tire installation.

1) $75 quote to replace the cabin air filter, since there is nesting on the air filter and it might fall into the blower motor causing them to need to remove the blower motor to clean. Really? I'm thinking of just YouTubing this and being careful about removing the existing filter.

2) $100 for a 4-wheel alignment since my tires show slight "cupping".

3) $100 for a coolant flush

4) $90 for "4 wheel brake service" because "brake pads are starting to stick in the brackets".

What do y'all think of these?

Do you get a choice of KY or Vaseline too? The cabin filter can be bought for about $25. The first time it will take you maybe 10 minutes, nest time only 5. The hardest part is taking the junk out of the glove box. Mine even came with instructions.

Considering how he wants to shaft you on other stuff, you probably don't need the alignment. Possible, but doubtful

As for the cooling flush, the only valid reason at this stage is to increase dealer profit. As him to show you where the manual says to flush the system. If you look it up, 120,000 miles of 120 months.

Brake service, hard to say. I did have a caliper hang up on a Sonata due to crap from salted roads. I'd give it a maybe in the rust belt, a no in Phoenix. Sounds like a money maker to me. I was at a dealer and a customer in the service waiting area was saying how expensive it is to maintain her car. She was following the dealer's recommendations. I showed her the manual and what Hyundai recommends. She thanked me and just said "never again"

When you go back, be sure to ask about the special on cleaning the radio antenna. Could need some old signals cleaned out and freshened up.

What do y'all think of these?

1) do it yourself! .... I never done that before, but after watching on YT, it took me less than 10 min. to replace cabin filters in both cars - my '15 Genesis and wife's '14 Santa Fe

2) I wouldn't let then do that. Depends where you live, find the shop that does the cars alignments all day long. "Just Tires" is very good at it.

3) coolant flash at 25k miles? hahah ................I don't think so.

4) I think they're still trying to get some $$$ out of your pocket.

Most of the prices are on par of what dealer would charge, BMW 4 wheel alignment is almost 200. Most performance shop are 125+ for labor and 175is for Dyno/tuning time.

Prices are in order, but does all the work have to be done? If the owners manual says coolant is good for 120,000 miles it is a scam to try selling a flush at 25k. Dealer says it needs alignment but it is ok, that would be an overcharge too, but we can't determine that from here.

cabin filter isn't hard to do yourself. good place to save money.
What is "cleaning" the brakes? I'm a tech... I do this... I've never charged someone to "clean" their brakes. Do they mean fluid flush? If so, the price doesn't seem terribly out of line.
Coolant flush, as previously mentioned, sounds like a money grab on a service you definitely don't need.

IF you actually need an alignment, the price is pretty standard/spot on. But after a 25k coolant flush recommendation, I'd question the actual need for it and ask to see the cupping of the tires. "cupping" as you put in "I don't believe them" quotes, is an actual thing, but I'd ask to have them actually show you where the tires are cupped for proof of the need for an alignment.

Cabin filter is a DIY. Generally can find on EBay in a two pack for around $25. Takes 10 minutes tops.
Coolant flush...too soon.
Alignment cost seems about right. But do you need it? I wouldn't know.
Brakes cleaned? Never heard of just cleaning the brakes. But I'm old and may have missed something new that has come along.

One thing you can take from this. Be cautious when dealing with these people.

alignment cost is abut right the others are a joke.

Some dealers like to push service work at customers......If they tried that with me, I'd look for a different dealer.
