  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Deceleration sound

Final outcome: this sound is a known issue and has a case # assigned by Hyundai. However, there is no adjustment currently available. When there is one, owners will be notified.

I have a 2010 4.6 and have a different 'deceleration sound' issue. It is only when decelerating under cold (just starting out) conditions. There is a fairly loud low frequency rumble that you can really feel in the armrests. Anybody have a similar problem?

I took the car in for initial scheduled maintenance this morning. The tech verified the noise and said he had never observed it before. He called Hyundai and they advised him that the transmission needs to be replaced.

The dealer is getting the unit and will provide me a loaner while they do the repair. He assured me that the car is safe to drive until then. I didn't ask if there is a service bulletin on this, but I will when they call me back.

hmmmm i bet there is still noise!

Any updates? I have the same noise but I don't think it is that loud.
Nothing further at this point. Mine is not especially loud, but it is quite noticeable. It sounds like an old manual transmission in third gear decelerating, and the longer I hear it the more annoying it becomes.

I just picked up a new 2011 4.6 Genesis and it has the same issue. When I'm coasting there's a droning noise but as soon as I apply the throttle it goes away. Any update on when Hyundai will have a fix for this issue? The car is so quiet at speed that the noise is quite noticable.

You're the first person here to report this problem since my original post. The latest I have (as of a couple of weeks ago) is that this is a known issue, a case number has been assigned to it, and affected owners are to be notified when a solution is found. I have been assured that the noise does not indicate any likelihood of transmission failure or other dire consequences, and that Hyundai is working on it. I hope they get it fixed soon because I find the noise annoying (but passengers in the car don't notice it unless I point it out to them).

I guess it's not the transmission then because the 3.8 and 4.6 have different transmissions. I'm sure it's not an isolated case, but 90% of the people won't notice it because the only time you hear it is with the radio off and a smooth road so the other noises don't mask the sound. I haven't reported it to the dealer yet, but when I get 1,000 miles on the car, I will take it in for an oil change... I always change my oil at 1,000 miles on a new car and then every 3,000 miles after that.... I will report the noise and see what they say. FYI, mine's a 2011 model but with a build date of 7/2010. I picked up the car with 9 miles on the odo.

I never thought it was the transmission either (especially since replacing the transmission doesn't fix the problem): since it happens in both 3.8 and 4.6 models, it must be someplace else in the drivetrain - driveshaft, differential, rear axles, whatever...

And you're right - many people might not even notice it, or might think it's normal.

Anyone hear the sound after changing to a different tire? I have had tires on past cars that made noise at slow speed when decelerating or backing up slowly.

Mine has a deceleration sound when I start to coast at low speeds. It reminds me of burbling when a car is held in gear and you let off of the gas. But mine changes to lower gears while doing this.

Mine doesn't happen at low speeds - it happens when I take my foot off the accelerator at speeds between about 55 and 65 mph. I don't notice it above about 65 or below about 55.
