  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Defective Ultimate Head Unit Systems from Hyundai

Had my defective head unit installed today...seems to be working fine now (so far).

I'm glad to hear that the new head unit fixed your problems. As I wait for mine to arrive, I was wondering if you notice any changes with the software on it. Did they also replace the SD card or reuse the old one? I had an intermittent problem with SD card (getting error message saying "Insert SD Card") and hope that problem will be fixed with a new head unit.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Actually, the old head unit (navigation system, radio, etc.) was the problem...so, they replaced the entire unit. The did not replace the SD card and did not have any problems with that. My issues (several of them) all were with the head unit itself. I did not notice any software changes.

This was explained to me when I took the survey a few months back. The Ultimate package unit was designed by LG, and the Tech (smaller screen) was designed by Hyundai internally. It seems risky to integrate such a system from two manufacturers , but maybe development was under a time constraint and had to outsource.

Just wondering if this is a common issue with the Ultimate package since I currently am considering this.

I currently own a 2014 Q50, and the main reason it is getting replaced is because Infiniti could not fix my navigation issue ever since the SD Card reader started showing an error message (they also replaced my entire navigation control unit as well), and Infiniti is buying back the vehicle.

It was a headache going back and forth to dealership, so I'm wondering if the defective head unit is only for the cars equipped with the Ultimate? Anyone have just the technology package and had to replace the head unit?

I don't think there is a major issue with the Ultimate head units, I think it is somewhat of an isolated problem.

I have an occasional problem with it losing my Sirius preset, but that is about it. I will eventually bring the car in for the recalls and, hopefully, have the Sirius problem corrected at that time. I believe it will be fixed by a software upgrade.

I don't have any issues with my 5.0 Ultimate head unit. Works like a charm...

Hate to revive old threads, but glad I found this.

Took my car in a few weeks ago for the GPS getting "lost" issue.

I showed the man who checked me in the video below, but the final conclusion when I left was that there must be GPS interference causing the issue and they can't fix it. They admitted they've seen the issue on an Azera and that they couldn't fix it with a map update. He tried to explain it had something to do with Google, but I had to get back to work so I didn't feel like arguing.

That's strange. Where are you located? I wonder if another Genesis would have the same problem at the same location.

Midwest - Indiana

I've had this issue occur in my town, while driving down the highway/interstate in the middle of no where, and while in downtown Indianapolis with all the tall buildings.

I've got multiple videos of this happening in many different places.

I've had this happen a few times over the years, on just about every GPS I've had.
Cars included Infiniti G35, Sonata, Azera, and now the Genesis.

I was driving out of my subdivision, and the car seemed to think it was about 1/4 - 1/2 mile to the west of the actual location, and not on a road. Shortly after I turned onto the main street, the issue corrected itself.

The issue with my Genesis was very brief, and it happened during a strong snow storm.
I think that probably had something to do with the problem. It corrected itself after about 2 minutes from leaving my driveway.

I suspect that this can happen with any GPS, but if it happens frequently, you probably have a hardware issue.

See my message above. I am noticing snow on your video. Perhaps it's related somehow. Does this happen often without any possible snow impact?

Snow doesn't matter, I've had this happen in South Carolina when the temp was 80+F and it hasn't snowed until recently here.

The issue always corrects itself after roughly 2 minutes. The last time I had this issue too I stopped the car, turned it off, and turned it back on. The issue did not correct itself. I've also tried pressing the small reset button on the face of the dashboard to reset the head unit. This reset also does not fix the issue.

That sounds like a hardware issue, perhaps the GPS antenna. After doing a bit of research, Snow or Rain in and of itself should not be a problem. Snow or water collecting on or blocking the antenna surface can cause this type of issue.

I had problems with the Nav system on my base '15 Genny. First, it would show the car being in a different state; antenna replaced; worked properly for about 6 months, then same thing again; head unit replaced but then the system "froze" at the dealership; then the system's wiring harness was replaced (even though the individual wires tested OK) which fixed the problem.

Symptoms of the defective units #2 and #3 include a double frame in the backup camera view (see photo) and no “Top View” camera option. I was told that these units had incorrect software burned into some of the ROM chips..

Yikes! you are telling me that the "double frame" shown in the OP's photo aren't normal? I had my head unit replaced some months back due to really bad Sirius drop outs. This solved the Sirius problem but the first time I put in reverse I too had the "double frame". I assumed that this was somehow part of a new software design.

I wonder if another trip to the dealer is in my future?

If you've had your head-unit replaced and you get the "double frame", it is a configuration issue. I wish i knew what the setting was, but I had the same problem and the Master Tech at my dealership fiddled with it for about 10 minutes and it was corrected.

I was driving home from dinner with my wife last Saturday night and all the radios stopped working. Sirius, AM, FM, no reception at all. The nav continued to work just fine.

We stopped at the grocery store and when we started for home the radios started working again after half a mile.

This hasn't happened before or since.

Had my head unit replaced today due to the GPS issues. The new unit had the double frame reverse camera. They kept the car and gave me a loaner. They will look at it next week, but I know they are already considering pulling a head unit out of a new car. The manager told me the service engineer said that was all coded in the software and not able to be fixed.

If there is any info anyone has on how to fix that reverse camera issue I can email it to the service manager at the dealership I use.

I just had my head unit replaced in my ultimate because SiriusXM returned to the preview channel several times per month. A new (not refurbished) head unit was installed. So far so good, but i need time to determine whether or not the problem was fixed with the head unit replacement.
