  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I'm sooooo freakin' pissed.

I just noticed a vertical 1' dent on my passenger side rear door. It also has a dime side dent at the very top about 4" below the window. The part where the door gets some shape (The factory mold of the door, not the molding at the bottom).

Do you think this can be fixed? It is snowing right now so I can't take any pics of it but it shows up BIG TIME in the sun.

All I know is that someone intentionally did this. It wasn't hit by a car and the "average" person opening up their car door to hit mine wouldn't have done this. All I can picture is some ass hole kids thinking I'm some rich dude with a Bentley or something. It appears that it was hit by someone else's door multiple times in the same spot.

Any body damage can be fixed if done properly. Don't beat yourself up speculating about the cause, what's done is done. There are a million different things that could have happened. I know it's tough to do but just try and calm down, and then find a proper body shop. I feel your pain though. Good luck.

Look in the phone book for the DENT GUY, or call your dealership and ask them for the Dent Guy they use. These dents and dings can be removed without breaking the paint and are very reasonably priced. My Dad had a dent in his Sonata and 175 later you could not see anything.

True! A million different things could have caused this.

Reminds me of my trip returning from Phoenix last April. On my way to Roswell, we stayed overnight just South of Albuquirque, at a great Motel in Los Lunas. After check in, came out to the car and saw a large black "scrape" on my front bumper, just forward of the right front wheel. WTF? Got my bottle of polish out and cleaned it up to see just how bad the scrape was. After much scrubbing, all the black came off. It looked like a tire scrape. (someone elses tire). I know I did not hit any rubber things and I did not feel anyone else hit me, so all I can think of is someones tire, or something made of rubber, rubbed on the bumper, and left the mark.

If you are not there, you never know exactly what causes these things.

That's a bummer. :(

Ask around for a body shop or service that specializes in Paintless Dent Removal (PDR) -- if you go to a normal body shop, they're going to likely fill and repaint, and it will be expensive.

PDR is the way to go, if possible.

Thanks for the responses guys/gals. I'm actually not that pissed.... umm... nah, I guess I am but what are you gonna do. It just sucks to know you got this beautiful car with a black eye now.

I'll stop by an autobody shop on Monday to get looked at. I'll let you know what happens. And if it stops snowing I'll take a pic.

Don't feel bad.......a branch in a wind storm bounced off of my roof (leaving 2 dings) and went through my daughter's windshield.... A paint less removal guy I know says $60 will do it but I also got burned paying for the windshield!!!!!

One foot on a rear door sounds like someone's kid swung a SUV door open with force. Do you typically park next to other cars and close to the entrances to stores?

I make a conscientious effort to park at the back of the lot but sometimes you have to park next to cars / trucks in the city. ...I don't know when or where this could have happened.

I'm considering buying a 2009 (or thereabouts) Genesis for my wife. I am very impressed with the way the car looks and with everything I have read. A friend warned me that Hyundai's in general have pretty thin sheet metal and dent easily. Do you think this is the case for the Genesis?

No, I do not. The Genesis' sheet metal is at least on par w/ my prior car, a Lexus GS430 and noticeably thicker than my prior Honda made vehicles.

Having spent some time in/around other recent Hyundai products, I'd say the Genesis sedan is built to a higher standard. The Sonata appears to have thinner, more easily dented sheet metal, but so does most of it's competition.

You want to see 'tinny' sheet metal in a new $35-40k car, check out the new Maxima. I was pretty shocked, and not in a good way.

I certainly don't think this is the case with the Genesis. I'm not even sure this is the case with other Hyundai vehicles. I had significant damage to my Genesis back on October of last year when I was T-boned by a heavy duty truck while I was driving down the highway. My vehicle had almost $7K in repairs and the body guy seemed pretty impressed with the quality of the components and they seemed very solid to me.

My daughter drives a 2008 Elantra and I would say it's sheet metal is easily the equivalent of other vehicles in it's category. She previously owned a 2006 Honda Civic and we've had work done on both vehicles due to minor bumps/dents. The quality of the sheet metal appeared to be virtually indistinguishable between these two vehicles.

I'll second this one, Ash. I had a 1999 red Miata with 200 miles on the clock when a hail storm hit. The dent gypsies from OK came through town and fixed it like new for half what a body shop would have done and I didn't have to drive a Bondo-mobile.

That's reassuring. Thanks to all for the quick replies. Now, let me research this "jittery ride" issue a little more...

Note as well that the hood is aluminum

So is the lower half of the trunk lid FWIW (the part around the license plate). :)
