  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I just got my 2nd oil change on my 2014 Genesis V6. I noticed the oil was black from soot like my Diesel Mercedes. Has anyone considered running
Diesel rated Mobil 1. These oils keep soot in suspension longer than traditional oil used in gas burners. Does anyone know if all conventional oil
have these properties now that most new engines are DI

The diesel rated oil is likely much heavier than you would want. Most are 15W-40 which is not the best for our gasoline engines.

I live in the South. Mobil 1 diesel is 5W40

Even that is too heavy. Hyundai calls for 5W-20 which is much lighter than 40.

I think the key is change the oil often. But I understand your concern. DI is great for power but has some drawbacks that are becoming known over time.

5W30 is also approved by the factory. It seems the soot is only an issue if it
comes out of suspension. The diesel oils keep soot in suspension for up to 15,000 miles. It follows all oil should have this property given the transition to DI gas engines..

This is probably going to morph into another oil thread. I'm using the Mobil 1 5w-40 Turbo Diesel oil in all my vehicles except the Genesis. I'm sure it work fine there also, but I want to maintain the 100,000 mile warranty.

A 5w-40 oil will not hurt anything by being "too thick" as even a 5w-20 oil is much, much thicker at startup and for 10-20 minutes thereafter. That is, if a 40 weight oil is too thick at operating temps, the engine would have been damaged during startup with the 5w-20 oil.

You might loose a tenth or two of mpg with the "thicker" oil, however-------------------which is why most car companies today "recommend" a thin oil. They want all the mpg they can get at CAFE measuring time.
