Difference between the 14 and 17 speaker Lexicon systems?

What's the exact breakdown of differences between these two systems aside from the actual interface (nav vs no nav)?

Where are there more/less drivers on each system, what's the specific differences in amps and sound processing, and I guess most important of all what's the difference in effective sound quality?

I'd actually probably just get the tech package but it requires the premium package with the 18" wheels which I don't really care for... especially when I'm being charged a grand for them and they're likely going to affect the ride quality.

Thanks. As far as I see the processing and drivers are virtually identical except for the addition of a pair of midrange drivers on the front doors and the addition of a tweeter for the center.

The tweeter at center would be VERY important for any true surround sound encoded content, movies especially since 80% of voice content comes from the center channel. In fact it seems to me like almost the worst move they could have made when deciding what to take away from the 17 speaker system to make a lesser system. Almost anything aside from removal of the sub would have made less of an impact for multichannel audio. Stereo audio pushed out to simulate multichannel on the other hand, I bet you won't notice much difference there.

I can't speak for the 14 speaker since I have the 17. But I will agree with Threxx. I have popped in a couple of concert DVDs with 5.1 encoding, and MAN!!!! I felt I was right in the middle of the audience. Much better than my Bose surround in my den. Regular FM, XM.. I'm not sure you'll see a difference. FM-HD, maybe.

All I can say is that I get so many comments from people that ride with me on the Lexicon with 17 speakers!

As for why the car system sounds better than Bose....Bose offers only limited audio range--no where near anything else (i.e., Dolby, or others). Thus the industry moniker..."no highs, no lows...must be Bose." They have excelled at marketing phase-matching, but have missed the mark on other essentials. My Gen has 14, and sounds great.

Trouble is they would probably mount all 17 speakers in one enclosure to cut cost!
