Differences/improvements from 2015 to 2016

So I am in the market for either a 2015 or 2016 Genesis.

Obviously with any new model there are growing pains.

So any general rules I need to follow or things to look for when looking for 2015-2016 models?

Looking at my local used market, there seems to be a substantial price difference from 2015 to 2016 (a few thousand +).

One thing off the top of my head are the 2016 has the DRL while the 2015 still have the amber ones.

Reading some of the threads here, sounds like the 2015 has head unit, headlight switch modules, etc. issues. Have those been mostly corrected in 2016.

Also, any quick tell-tale signs when looking online to see what options/packages are on the car:

Option 2: Signature Package
Includes power sunroof, power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a 14-speaker audio system, HID headlamps, and ventilated front seats.

Option 3: Technology Package
Features premium leather seats, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise with full start/stop capability, and front/rear park assist.

Option 4: Ultimate Package
Adds real wood trim and aluminum trim, a head-up display, a 17-speaker audio system, a power trunklid, and dual-mode climate control.

Sounds like Option 3 is the most common and I should stay away from the Base model.

I guess general question is should I steer clear of 2015 and go for 2016 or are both years essentially the same?

The head units in 2015 were not as reliable. I had mine replaced at 18 months. Changed for the 16.

Thanks. I'm guessing 2015 models are out of warranty now so any issues would be out of pocket.

I would buy a 2016 model if possible. The 2016 seems to have some upgrades that was common issues(sunroof,radio,back-up camera,DRL) on the 2015 models. The only issue with the 2016 models is a lack of a V8 option for the U.S.

I wanted the V8 model so I had to get the 2015 5.0 Ultimate model and do not regret it. However, it does have a glitchy light switch and backup camera.
 
As for the options, there are two nav systems for this car, the base system (8" screen, 14 speakers, and no jog dial in the center console) and the premium system (9.2" screen, 17 speakers, and jog dial in the center console). The easiest way to tell the difference is to look for the jog dial in the center console (see attached picture). Depending on what features you want, the premium system may not be the best option. Specifically, while the base system can up updated to include Android Auto/Apple Car Play (updates are now free; you just need a 32 GB SD card), the premium system for the 2015 or 2016 can not and will likely never support AA/ACP. AA/ACP support can be added to the premium system in later model years (around 2017 or 2018, I don't remember exactly when).

The 2015 using the turn signals for the DRL is a pain as the bulbs burn out every few months.

Not exactly true. The stock bulbs in the 2015 models are amber 2537NA bulbs which are normal duty turn signal bulbs not recommended for DRL duty. If a person upgrade to heavy duty amber 2537LL bulbs; the bulbs last years even as DRL like in my case with my 2015. I swapped out my old stock 2537NA bulbs for amber Phillip 2537LL bulbs over two years ago without any burn out issues.

The proper bulbs solved the DRL burn out issue in my case.
 
Did you have any problems with heat? The last time I replaced my bulbs, the socket looked a little crispy...

My stock daytime runners are white . Not amber is this right or did they get changed before i got the car. Only had the car two years. No issues with the lights only the stock when the mode is set to auto lights. They will flicker off and on.

In the US they are amber. Maybe a Canadian thing?

My sockets looked good. However, they could have been changed before I bought the car if they were defective.

I believe that the sockets are damaged when the standard 2357N/A bulb overheats while used as DRL. 2357N/A are for blinkers use only, not for extended constant use a DRL lamp.

Wrong bulb or non-stock bulb. I would check to make sure that the owner did not use a LED 1157 bulb. LED bulbs flicker when they start failing. Most 1157/2357 socket LED bulbs are not designed to be used as DRL and will fail at about the same time as the halogen 2357N/A bulbs or even sooner if the LED bulb is really cheaply made.

I have been using these with no burnout issues for over two years. I bought the bulbs in 2018

There were a couple of different DRL configurations in 2015. In the US, the HID version uses the amber turn signal bulbs as the DRL, while the halogen headlight version uses the halogen high beam bulb as the DRL. I don't remember if the Canadian version matched the US version or used the LED strip as the DRL like the rest of the world (and the US version starting in 2016).

The flickering in auto may be a known fault with the headlight switch. Hyundai recently extended the warranty on all 2015s to cover it.

Makes sense, I figured that was the case - I haven't used the DRLs since I replaced them a couple of years ago. Such a PITA to get to on the V8.

Interesting, I am still on the stock bulbs now going on 6 years next month. I have had a set of replacement bulbs on deck for like 5.5 years, the originals just will not quit.

Good for you I guess, however many other owners including myself has had to swap the DRL bulbs in our 2015 models within the first few years of owning the car.

What model and year of car do you even claim to own?

If you average two hours per day of daytime driving with the DRLs on, this bulb should only last about six months (200 days). Based on these rough estimates, six months to two years is a reasonable estimate of these bulbs' life when used as DRLs. The LL bulbs should double this estimate.

I'm only up to about 55k over the same time, mostly run it in Auto. If they are burning out so quickly it's likely an electrical problem that should be addressed, or bad bulbs.

Kind of funny how luck of the draw works, I've had many electrical problems over the six years resulting in $$$ warranty repairs, but not the $10 bulbs!

Damn, life is weird like that.

Luckily I only have had minor electrical hiccups so far with my 2015. Bad light switch(turns light off and on randomly in auto mode) and reverse camera that do not change angles(stuck in normal view mode). My only other issues were a cooled seat issue traced to a unattached seat duct and a burned out DRL light bulb.

Not bad for a 5 year old used car.
