  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Went to the dealer for an oil change on my 2012 R Spec with 34,000 miles and the dealer said I need a differential service. Costs $200!
Anyone heard of such a thing before? Is it needed?

please read the manual. it's not required for at least 100K. the dealer is trying to rip you off. I'd actually be somewhat pissed if the dealer told me that.

next they will tell you ... they need to change the air in your tires to nitrogen because it rides better... uh yeah. lol.

ppp

That is BS. Check your maintenance schedule in manual. I did mine myself at 100,000 miles. Cost less than $15.00.

Haven't peeked back there yet. Is there a drain plug, or do you have to remove the cover?

Yes, thanks...I thought the same...this dealer try's to do all this unnecessary work all the time...
They also told me I needed a radiator /coolant service, which cost $200!!!
I like the car... but hate the service experience...

I asked my dealer about the rear differential drain last year and refill and they quoted me $79. I would do this service myself, but not for a few more years.

My 4.6 manual says the 1st coolant flush should be 5 years, or 60,000 miles whichever comes 1st. I had the dealer do the coolant flush and synthetic oil change back in April and it was around $200 if I remember correctly. My oil changes are free, but I do pay the price difference for using synthetic.

When I get home I can check the diff to see if it has a drain and fill plug, or if the cover needs to be removed. I just did my diffs on my Outback and the rear has a drain and fill plug, which makes it a breeze. I don't know why all vehicles with a differential would not have 2 plugs, unless they are trying to get the customer to come in for service.

Drain plug. Real easy.

You must not have owned a Chevy before. :(

So two plugs or one?? I just want to know if the rear diff cover needs to be removed or if Hyundai streamlined the process like Subaru. Notice the 2 plugs on the pic?

I agree that the rear end should be changed around 90-100 thousand miles.
Now when it comes to coolant, I change every 3 years.
With aluminum motors and or heads, that is something you would want 100% reliable.
I had it done on my 2009 last year with 38 thousand miles.
I change my synthetic(Royal Purple) oil every 3 months period.

Once of prevention.....

Two plugs drain and fill. Remove fill plug first.

I have, but nothing with RWD. The Genesis is my 1st RWD car:)

Wife's old truck, an '08 Colorado, had no drain plug. I couldn't believe it. Had to remove the pumpkin.

Please tell us the name of this dealer so we can be in the know too.

It's Paramus Hyundai in Northern NJ.

Good to know. This dealership is the closest to me but I prefer to drive a distance to Wayne for better service. I've heard several horror stories from rt4 hyundai.

Actually, it's not required at all if you read the normal maintenance schedule (page 7-10 in my 2009 Genesis manual). But if you flip to page 7-11 you'll see that it notes a 60K service interval for "severe usage conditions". This includes things like driving on hills, or in heavy traffic on hot days, or on rough - dusty - muddy - sandy - graveled - salted roads.

Basically, they wrote it so that their lawyers can get you, if they want to.

I change mine at 60K...easy to do...10 minutes on the lift...couple of bucks worth of oil...and the Hyundai lawyers won't be able to say a thing.

Don't take it personally. Dealers could not stay in business without their service departments, and the fact that some people fall for their service "advice" allows you to buy cars from them at a lower price than you would otherwise have to pay.
