  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey, everyone!

I just wanted to reach out to the Genesis community and see if anyone else has experienced this "issue" with their wheels. I have a 2011 Genesis 4.6 and just crossed over 102k miles. Within the last two years, the clear coat on them has deteriorated, and I can't find anything that will remove this black residue. I'm open to suggestions regarding any ways to clean them. I understand that refinishing them, painting, etc. are all options but wanted to see if anyone has had success with cleaning them their selves first.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

Yeah they look terrible, try mother's aluminum wheel cleaner it seems to almost shine mine to near chrome. Hope this helps

Try Iron-X original strength. It is sold by CarPro and available on Amazon or many hi-end detail suppliers online. It is safe for painted surfaces but will remove all the accumulated metallic particles. Spray it on while wheels are cool. Let it perk about 4-5 minutes then spritz a sponge or mit and agitate the remaining residue on the wheels and spray off. preferably with a pressure washer. Do not panic, the wheels will turn purple rather quickly but should rinse clean. This stuff can and is used to decontaminate paint on your car prior to claying and sealant/coating application so it will not hurt the paint. A second application may be necessary as bad as yours look in photo but just dry wheel mostly before second spray.
Good luck.

That looks like clear coat failure. If you look at the first picture the top of the wheel in between the spokes it shows deteriorating clear coat.

Try IronX as mentioned above but I fear those will require sand/bead blasting and have to be re-clear coated to look ok.

I feel sure to look new again a Refinish is going to be necessary but Iron-X should aid in removing the black.

Were you able to clean and refinish it?

I wouldnt even attempt to correct something like that. A trim shop/wheel repair shop might be able to refurbish them, but I'm thinking it's going to be expensive with the damage.
