This happened on the way home from work tonight...just driving along and about 10 minutes into the drive my display just goes haywire. I wasn't touching the DIS, just listening to music. I left the car running when I arrived at the house and snapped a few pictures.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Oh yeah....an hour later I went out, started the car, and still have the same problem, so this was not corrected on reboot.

Looks like a lose connection.. Kinda looks like my monitor when the connector/plug is hanging out a bit...

It does look like a bad/loose connection, or possibly glitchy video RAM in the display unit.

Since it did not sort itself out, this probably requires a trip to the dealer to get resolved.

Has the car been in extreme heat, or driven for prolonged periods on really bumpy roads by any chance? Not that either of those should cause that problem, mind you, but if there was a component that was already borderline, those could have pushed it over the edge.

The one thing to try would be to disconnect the battery (following the procedure outlined in the manual) and let it sit for ~15 minutes or so, and then reconnect and start it up. There is an outside chance that the computer has locked hard, and completely robbing it of all power might cause it to reset itself.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the input.
Just tried to start the car again about 8:30pm EST, and it was still there. The initial Genesis boot screen looked fine, then the DIS warnign screen also looked fine. When I pressed the control knob to jump from the warning screen I had about 2 seconds of normal auxiliary (USB) screen, then the video noise took over again. Audi is still flawless, just video problems. Changing to XM or FM does nothing - still a mess.
I was driving along on a nearly new very smooth road for about 10 minutes or so, and this just started. I'll try to do the battery disconnect/reconnect in the next day or so and see if that happens.
I do agree that it looks like a loose video connector, but I'll try to do the battery disconnect first before I spend time at the dealer. It's just aggravating that I have to spend time doing this out of my already busy schedule.

That info (startup screen and normal video screen for 2 seconds of USB) makes me think that it is not a loose connector.

Really hard to say, but my gut says shorting/grounding problem leading to static buildup in the display circuitry of the nav unit, which craps the screen out like that.

It could also be heat related - electronic components heat up in use, and so they can work for a few moments, then stop.

Keep in mind that a battery disconnect will erase your option settings, radio presets, and phone book. Although if you take it in for service, that's likely to happen in any case, whether they disconnect or end up replacing the monitor or head unit.

I was the same guy who took the EMP surge from a close lightning strike - that was over 2 weeks ago with no side effects, and flawless performance ever since, but you know it makes me wonder if there is any relationship going on here. Sometimes electronics can sustain a little damage and then just crap out when they feel like it. Hopefully it's something as simple as a loose connection, but who knows?

rather than start the car, what results do you get when using the DIS from ACC?

I thought of this as well this morning when I went to get in the car to go to work. I just used the ACC setting and the first "Hyundai Genesis" screen booted up fine, then I went into the warning screen just fine as well. When I hit the DIS control knob and exited the warning screen it went to full video noise mode again. This duplicated what happens when starting the car normally.

Beginning about a month after I got mine in Jan 09, about once or twice a month my display will begin to look a little like yours but not nearly as bad (you can still make out what is on the screen on mine). I quickly found that I can give the dash a quick slightly hard tap above the display ( specifically, above the right hand corner) and it immediately clears up which suggests some sort of loose connection or slight short. I haven't taken it to the dealer yet as the closet one is in Atlanta which is 70 miles away. Also the chance of it happening there is almost nill. Additionally if it doesn't get any worse I would rather live with it than have them take out the dash. However the next time I am near the dealer I will go in and report the problem so I can get it on record in case it gets worse, even though I expect they will say they have to see the problem before they can fix it (again at least I will have the problem on record).
You may want to give your dash a tap or two to see if you get any change or indication that it is a loose connection.
If you do go tot he dealer please keep us posted.
Good luck and getting it corrected.

Thanks. I'll try the "Fonzie tap" and see if that does anything. I'm most likely going to go to the dealer within the week because the screen is unreadable. I think Sal was right from the beginning of this thread and I'm beginning to believe it is a loose connection.

Update: I was too aggravated with the screen being out so I left work early and went by the dealer. They checked the screen function and grounds, but couldn't find anything. They called the service hot line and were told by Hyundai to replace the monitor. I'll try again on Wednesday and see if this does it.

Update...and it's not going well so far. At the dealer they order a new DIS screen. On Tuesday evening (night before I was too come in to have the screen replaced) they called and said they ordered the wrong LCD screen, and could I come in on Thursday when they would have the correct screen. I told them I didn't want to have to take off work again, so I made an appointment for Saturday. This morning I was there when they opened (Key Hyundai in Jacksonville FL) and they took me right in. About 90 minutes later they came to me and told me it was NOT the LCD screen, it was something else. He immediately offered a loaner to me in case they cannot get it figured out today. Tech Assistance department from corporate is only open during the week and the dealers cannot get assistance on a Saturday. (arrrgghhh!) They still do not know what is wrong, but if I was a bettin' man I'll say the DIS will have to be replaced. I was offered a loaner and am driving a Sonata.

I explained to him that driving with the DIS screen in that condition is dangerous to drive at night as it kills your night vision - kinda like getting a flashlight in the face. I thought about blocking it out with a piece of cardboard but didn't want to get tape adhesive on my leather dash.

So far I am not impressed with Hyundai Service. The service writers have been just fine, but I miss my Lexus service department right about now. The level of service is definitely higher for Lexus, and unless they get this worked out they are going to start loosing customers. I chose to buy this car when I traded in my Lexus, and to date it has been great. Nobody likes to have to service their vehicle, but when you are buying a premium vehicle you just expect a little bit more TLC and attentiveness. More updates to follow.

Do you think the service dept is bad or is this more a year one issue? I haven't had a problem yet (knock wood) but reading your dealer experience I wonder if this is a bad service dept or an issue of knowledge of a year one car.....

The dealer called you when they order the wrong part...(I have shown up to dealers in the past to learn the same)....

They agreed to service on Saturday(I would guess their Genesis Tech had to come in special to do the work)...

They provided a loaner car when they couldn't perform the service....

the failure to perform service appears to be a skill issue. For me, I expect some trouble with service on year one cars if the issue is "complex"

I am not trying to defend the service dept, however, if my dealer treated me this way I would be upset about the car but fairly happy with the service treatment...

Having said that, I really hope you get your car back 100% soon. Keep updating us.

1. I think it is a year one issue, but I never had this issue with my Lexus.
2. Wrong part ordered...no excuse - get it right the first time...period. Customer Service!
3. They were already open on Saturday, so I was just able to be there when they opened.
4. Loaner was to their benefit as well...they didn't have to put the car back together and waste m/hrs. Lexus always offered a loaner - even for a 2 hr job.
Service department was not abysmal, in fact it was just "normal". I am used to the Lexus service most always being more than I expected and treating me like my time was valuable. (It is) Even more of an impression to me was that I didn't have one single problem with my Lexus over a 7 year period. The only reason I had to go there was for routine maintenance.
Altogether I do miss the experience of not being treated as though I just bought an upscale car and they are treating me as such...knowing I can go elsewhere. Hyundai needs to latch onto this concept if they are going to sell Genesis ad Equus sedans and expect repeat customers. A simple but foreign concept to many Hyundai dealers...start acting like one of the big boys on the block.

While I don't particularly disagree with anything you said, keep in mind that there's a fairly significant amount of the sales price of premium cars devoted to the service experience and amenities. I would guess that many people bought the Genesis because it offers good value (i.e. is cheaper). They've definitely cut corners to make that happen.

What I think that will mean in the long run (i.e. over the next decade) is that the price of the Hyundai upscale line will approach that of the other manufacturers and the service and amenities will improve to that level. I don't think it's likely that they'll be able to maintain a 10-20% price undercut and offer the same experience as the established brands. Nor do I think the other manufacturers will reduce their price by 10-20%.

Update....
The new DIS was ordered and installed and I received a call this morning to come in and pick the car up. I took off of work early and the car was beautifully detailed and seemingly ready to go. After signing for the car I turned on the DIS and ran thru most all of the functions, put it in reverse to check out the camera and was generally pleased. I then went to re-pair my Blackberry and leave, but the phone would not pair. The final menu screen after you push to "pair phone" would not even come up. I monkeyed with the car for about 15 minutes then went back to my service advisor, he went and had a technician came out. They were stumped. They thought it might be my phone, but I demonstrated to them that it would pair with a new car just fine. They tried to reboot the system by pulling the fuse, and nothing worked. Tech Assistance (corporate) was stumped. Final answer is that they are going to order another DIS unit and try it again. None of this was any fault of the service department but seems to be a software problem with the new unit. I will say that most of the employees there, including the technicians, are not familiar with the complexities of the Genesis and will admit it up-front. I'll continue my notations on this until the problem gets solved for good. I'm hoping they get it fixed this time and I get a fully functional car back - I'm getting tired of driving the loaner Sonata and it makes me miss the Genesis nice, quiet ride even more. More to follow.

There was a software update for the DIS, I hope they checked the version before ordering a new DIS>

I told them about that, but they didn't seem to want to check that. The response was that if there is a new DIS they should have had the software update to it when they received it. Honestly I don't think that is the problem though because the DIS would not even go past the "pair phone" screen, but who knows. I would have thought they would have at least tried that one as it's a lot cheaper.

The final chapter....I hope.

Went back to the dealer for the third time and now I am on my third DIS. For all those out there that wonder what the technical name of this part is by Hyundai, it is "Navi Head Unit". Needless to say I'll have to reprogram everything again. I thought my garage door opener might be dead as well, but it works fine so that info must be stored elsewhere, which I now think is a good thing. Everything works, the dealer has treated me well, and I hope I'm good to go for a very long time. The car was again detailedas good as new, and this time they actually tested everything in the DIS, included pairing a phone up BEFORE they called me and told me it was ready this time.
I'll be getting an aftermarket, 3rd party extended warranty that covers everything bumper-to-bumper just to be safe. The Navi head unit is a $4200 part, and that would be very ugly to have to replace. Since they call it by that name I'll make sure the warranty covers a navigation system as well.
My lessons learned are that the dealer, including the technicians are not up-to-speed on the complexities of the Genesis since there are so few of them compared to the other vehicles the dealer handles in the shop. It will be up to you to have a very detailed explanation and symptoms when something goes wrong, including pictures if you can. The more detailed your explanation, the better the tech line will be able to help the dealer service technicians when you bring it in. After owning this car for several months it will be YOU that is the expert on the vehicle and the better you can help them out the sooner your problem will be solved. My service writer, Kirk, did a great job of handling what he could and trying to accommodate me, but he could not do the technical work or over-ride the technical hot line that the technicians have to consult when they are stumped, even when I would explain to them when they were not heading in the right direction.
I'm just glad to have my Genesis back and working again!:)
