I’m buying my first new car in almost 15 years. Circumstances have allowed me to treat myself with a new car and the GV70 pushes all the right buttons.
So, here we come to the Sales Experience. I’m set on 3.5 Sport Prestige in either a Mauna Red or Saviille Silver with Aquamarine Blue interior. Using the Inventory search on the Genesis website I’ve come to learn that these packages are extremely difficult to find. In fact, at some points in time there are exactly 1 of each (or none) available in the entire country.
That brings me to what I thought was a great find. Genesis of Santa Monica shows the Mauna Red with Aquamarine interior and I connected with a salesperson who seemed to have their act together and I even started the process of getting quotes for cross-country transport.
I’ll spare you ALL of the details but the experience left me reminded of my pre-Lexus days when I felt like I had to take a shower after coming in contact with a car salesperson.
• Each pricing detail I received from them had math that didn’t add up- usually around $2,800. When pressed they explained this was for the “dealers enhancements” which included the legendary exterior and interior “ protection” treatment. I know there are dealer mark-ups on MSRP all over the country. Fine- just call it what it is and I’ll deal with it.
• Their extended warranties were $4800 plus Tire and Wheel for 2,500! I know I can buy these separately but this was extreme and an insight into the dealership.
• The real clincher was when I asked for a photo of the odometer and after a delay I was informed it was in “off-site” storage. Then they told me it was a demo and had 1200 miles. Disappointed that this wasn’t a “new to me car” I asked for a discount. I also asked for actual mileage and was told “the owner is driving it and they didn’t want to bother him unless we already had a deal”. I bought a Lexus managers demo in the 90s and got a 10% discount. I loved that car. Santa Monica offered me a 1.5 % discount on the GV70. Sheesh. The vehicle also shows up on Cars.com with 2850 miles. Who knows what the mileage actually is or how the car has been driven.
• Needless to say I was no longer interested in having this trucked across the country- probably with other issues once it got here.
Sorry for the rave but Santa Monica is one of the only 4 stand-alone dealers in the country and I really expected a high-end treatment but it was more like a flaky used car lot.
The search continues.
