  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Saw this in the news and thought you guys would get a kick out of it. Don't get any ideas, Don! ;)

I can't say that I've never wanted to torch a car at the dealership before... I think we've all been victim of NPF (No Problem Found) at some point.

I'm very sorry Mr. Xxxxx but we can't duplicate the problem! (I've been there many times with a Honda Accord EX that I once owned, but I traded the car, not burn it).

Bob, you're too practical.

I have "burned" a few things in my dealerships lot before.

The Car: 2002 4Runner TRD Supercharged
The Scheme: "FREE TIRES FOR LIFE" (given that all maint. was done at dealer...and it was)
The Reason: Tires were shot, 3 were at the minimum level (2/32) but one on the rear was still at 4/32.
The Cause: DECLINED new tires until the 4th had fallen below 2/32.
The Effect: After determining in my own mind that my car was UNFIT to drive, due to the lack of tread on stock tires, I decided a quick way to alleviate my frustration and to receive my new tires was to simply push the Traction Control to the OFF position and SMOKE out the service bay while leaving THICK black marks on a freshly painted TOYOTA Red floor!!! Ahhhh...the look on the GM's face was priceless. I told him to call the cops and that I would call Toyota Headquarters. With a service bay full of oil change folks who had fallen for the scheme and witnessed the whole thing (tire measurement, confrontation, and tire burnage) he proceeded to greet me nicely. Mr. Reynolds, we will have your tires ready within the hour.

Within 2 weeks, the SCHEME..."FREE TIRES FOR LIFE" painting on the front of the dealerships windows were removed.

I hated to spoil it for those who whole heartily believed in the program...but heavens forbid if you miss one oil change!

To this day, I do not regret my actions. I hardly get mad, ill, or upset over anything...but this manager took me to the edge.

For years, I have maintained that the service department people at all dealerships are taught that they can dismiss 90% of customer problems with three simple answers.

1. What noise? I don't hear any noise!

2. That's normal, they all do that!

3. You just got a bad tank of gas.
