  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Does anybody know what the 'formula' for the Genesis sedan distance to empty (DTE) display is?

Let's see here:
- fill up car (which hadn't been on a long trip in a long time) on Saturday, it says ~550km DTE
- drive car mostly on the highway on Sunday, DTE slowly goes down from ~530km to ~400km maybe (even though way more than that was driven), then goes up to ~6xx km when the gas tank is filled
- drive car back on Tuesday, DTE goes steadily down, fill car up, now it says 720km.

As far as I can tell, it doesn't base DTE on your CURRENT driving and fuel burn, but instead on historical fuel burn over a long time in the past. And DTE never goes up, only down.

Anybody noticed this, too?

The DTE indicator looks at the average mileage since the last time you reset your average mileage display. If you have done a lot of city driving with lower mileage and then do some long highway trips, the DTE will adjust and slow down as the average mileage improves. Resetting the average mileage say once a month, will give you a more accurate DTE readout, assuming you do a mix of different driving over a month.

I don't think that's right...

I reset the average mileage display right before leaving on the Sunday trip. Then went 450km, 400+ of which were highway.

Why would the DTE not go up over time, if it was deciding based on mileage since the last reset? 150 km into the trip, say, it would have been calculating based on 20km city, 130km highway, which should have led to a number WAY above ~530kms (which was what it was saying before avg mileage was reset).

As I said, the only way I can see to get DTE to go up is to add more gas to the car. Then it can go up to higher than it was the previous time the tank was full.

I haven't been watching the changes to distance to empty but I did notice that the Genesis speedo reads high. This effects the estimated MPG rating, which is likewise high. I recall seeing a post where others commented on the same issue. This would suggest the miles to empty reading would be a bit optimistic on a full tank...and get closer as the tank empties (because it is a percentage error...not a fixed error.)

Maybe the DTE doesn't 'reset' until the next tank of gas goes in. Then it looks at the last recorded average mileage. I agree, I have never seen it go up, just go down more slowly if instant mileage improves.

My trip computer average was pretty consistent, within about 5-10%...until the last fill-up. It was sitting at well over my historical average, but I got my worst tank mileage EVER. With the same DTE as when I normally fill up, it took more than a gallon more than normal to fill up. :(
