  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Do headlights shut off in manual position?

I realize that the headlights shut off after a certain time when the stalk is set to automatic. The lights will go on and off depending on time of day. However, will the headlights go off if I forget to shut the lights off during a daytime thunderstorm? I do not hear any chime if the lights are left on and the driver's door is open. There does not appear to be any beep if I walk away with the key in my pocket. (The car is a base V6 with no options).

Thanks in advance.

Did you ever think about getting out of your car and looking? Yes, the headlights will turn off as soon as you stop the engine and exit the car (but not immediately when you stop the engine).

Exactly.

I would not have posted the question without first having looked at the headlights after shutting the car off. :p It does not seem as if the headlights do shut off. Is there suppose to be a chime that the headlights are still on?

Do all of the models/packages have the headlight auto off feature? The original poster doesn't say what package he/she has. Just wondering if the base models don't have the auto off feature. I would be surprised they don't.

The base model does have the auto off option on the headlight stalk. However, sometimes I need to put the headlights on during a rainstorm during daylight. All of my previous cars would sense that the headlights were on when you shut off the engine and opened the driver's door. There would be a reminder chime. The reminder is very helpful as sometimes one does not look at the headlights when exiting the car.

I think the lights go off regardless of whether you have the auto on feature selected as opposed to turning them off manually. As I always keep mine in auto mode, I put them back on auto even after using them in the manual mode during rain, I don't recall hearing a chime.

If headlights are turned on manually, the headlights do not go off when the engine shuts off. You need to exit the car first (not sure if you have to close drivers door). Because the headlights shut off automatically (unless you turn them on when the car is off), there is no reason to have a chime.

Actually, all you have to do is open the door.

Thank all of you who supplied helpful information. There may be a difference between base model and other models. I thought that the car may have a defect in the headlights. Based on the posted information, there seems to be an answer. If the headlights are on manual setting, the lights go off only after the engine is shut off and the driver's door is closed. The lights then go off after about 20 seconds. The automatic mode affects the headlights going on and off based on daylight or nighttime. The manual mode only applies to extinguish the headlights after about 20 seconds. The lights can also be shut off immediately by pressing the "lock door" icon on the fob or, of course, shutting the headlight stalk to off.

That's not news... my 1965 VW Beetle has a similar feature, except it takes longer to shut the lights...

..............until the battery drains completely :D
