  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Do you have to use dealerships for repairs and maintenance?

I'm in Charleston, SC and would like to find a repair place that can fix/service my G70 and hopefully not rip me off. I own my old Tahoe, which I get fixed easily enough down the road. But can you get a Genesis repaired and serviced anywhere other than the dealership? I used to lease my vehicles but bought out my lease last summer so now all of the problems are my problems.

Genesis wants $192 to replace engine air filter? Seems high to me? Can I do it myself?

Thank you for your advice!!!

Susan

All the main service items like oil changes, brake jobs, filters, etc can easily be performed by any auto repair/service shop. Air filters (I prefer WIX brand) cost about $35 pr. (you need two for the 3.3T motor) and require removing the 2 strut braces under the hood and a few clips that secure the air filter box covers. Takes about 5 minutes to change out but I also use a small vacuum to get the filter boxes cleaned up. I also save the old filters and use a compressor to clean the filters so I have 2 full filter sets to change when it's time. The in-cabin filters are also a simple change and cost about $20. Check youtube for how to videos on basic service items. Oil changes cost a bit more for the 3.3T motor since they require 7 qts of oil, I buy (3) 5qt jugs at a time for 2 oil changes and a quart left over for the next 3 jug buy (then I have those 2 extra qts to add to just one additional jug for that oil change, so 7 jugs will get 5 full oil changes). You can buy factory filters online for about $10 when you buy 3 at a time. Not sure what a trustworthy shop would charge for that oil change, probably in the $70 range.
btw, do you have the smaller 2.0 motor or the 3.3, the 2.0 will cost less for some of those service items.

Thank you! I have the 2.0. I will look at YouTube for sure. I also read recently that we don't have to change the oil as often as every 3,000 miles...more like 7 in the newer vehicles.

I change mine every 6k miles, I have the 3.3T but 6k should be good for your 2.0 as well, and you only have one air filter so that's even easier.

Just make sure you are documenting and retaining copies of all the service and that you have done any mandatory service as set forth in the manual. You have a right to do your service wherever you want but Genesis has a right to deny you warranty coverage if you can't show that you have done your mandatory service.

Awesome. Here is the estimate they gave me in case anyone is curious what a dealership charges:

I have another post asking if anyone thinks that first item is the current recall which fixes what I've been complaining about: you step on the gas and it doesn't go right away. They want me to pay for this fix.
Thanks tons for your expertise!

I'll be very careful of that. Thanks!

The washer fluid thing and oil leak is under warranty. My car has 40,000. miles

That filter charge is insane, it's a $15 filter and 5 minutes turning 4 bolts. The spark plugs are also simple in the 2.0, you might check around and see what reputable shops are charging for fuel injector service as well. Spark plugs are like $20 each for Iridium OEM quality and about 30 minutes to change out. Have no idea what that AC service would entail, I just change out my cabin filter every 20k miles on all my vehicles. Brake flush is good to do for a 4yr old car, price is sounds reasonable for a dealer. If you bought tires from a place like Discount tire they may include routine balancing when you bought them. As far as an alignment, if your tires are wearing fine and not pulling to one side when you brake or let go of the steering wheel (on a flat road) your alignment is probably ok. If you hit a pothole and something feels amiss than by all means get it checked.
And yeah, be sure to document any service/repairs not done by the dealer w/ full receipts, dates, mileage.

I do the maintenance schedule at the Genesis dealership.

Two reasons I do this,.........
1) Stuff like oil changes are covered as "warranty work". I'm guessing it's probably about $150 for the oil change for the 3.3t with the specified oil, oil filter and labor.
2) As noted up above, it's better to have a record of all maintenance done at the dealership. You never know how "finicky" the warranty stuff goes if you go outside of the dealership to get any work done.

You rock! Thank you so much. I'm copying and filing all of the responses.

Item A is changing plugs and pouring a bottle of Techron into the gas tank. $200 would make them a nice profit on that item.

I called to stop them from doing it but it was already done. Ugh. I also don't want to void the warranty.

I'm under the impression that oil changes were part of "warranty" work and are free? The first 3 years/36k miles?

Techron?? Do they seriously put that in the fuel tank?

Some do. Recommended if you don't use Top Tier gas

I obviously don't use gasoline but when I did, I ONLY used Top Tier gas. It is not that hard to find and one knows that there are good detergents, etc. in the fuel. But, if I were stranded in the middle of nowhere, of course I would put non Top Tier gas in the car.
