  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I need to replace my steering rack to my G70 2020 2.0T because when i rotate the wheel, it sounds like gears are grinding. It still works fine but the dealership says it'll cost 7.5k to do the job and they said it was the power steering rack. I'm looking to do it myself, however, i'm trying to find out if i put in a completely brand new steering rack, will it have to be reprogrammed? Also, doing research, I'm wondering if i'll be good with just replacing the column or just replacing the rack as a whole.

What's the story with your car? It should be covered under warranty. At any rate, the G70 has the motor on the rack, not the column, so not sure if it's easier or harder to replace. But at least they shouldn't have to mess with the interior.

Yes it is called variant coding and there are likely few places outside of the dealer that can do it.

Forgot to mention on the calibration. Yes, all EPS systems need to be calibrated so they know where the '0' point is, especially for cars with any kind of steering assist systems, like on our cars. Many scanners can do it, but they don't reportedly work on newer vehicles.

I'm not sure if the rack and pinion is the same on the 2.0 and 3.3 but it is a known issue that they're prone to being defective. There's even a recall on them Vehicle recall 20V447000 for Hyundai Genesis G70. (Jul. 31, 2020)

I had a lot of issues with my 3.3T when I got it (where it shouldn't have even left the lot, but also stuff I should have noticed.) Where after I had gotten the car, the transmission had this downshift issue but was replaced under warranty (had not even owned it for 2 weeks) when it was finally returned to me the steering was all messed up. The dealership (not the original one that sold me the car, but one closest to my house) tried pushing that 7.5k job on me too, but I ended up going back to the original dealership and they replaced it under warranty.

My father spoke to a tech at the dealership and the racks are very easy to damage, or are flat out faulty. Mine didn't make any noise like yours is, but it had very tight steering on the right side. Take your car to multiple Genesis dealerships until one gives you the correct diagnosis and remedy. The part, refurbished is like $1500 and brand new is a lot more. I floated the idea of replacing the electronic motor only to my friend who is a former master tech for mercedes and he flat out said DO NOT DO THAT. Besides still having to have it reprogrammed, there are other factors you cant account for and will most likely be wasting money.
