  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi I've read horror stories online about the transmissions specifically the 8spd Auto in the 2012 model. I just purchased a used 2013 with only 27k no warranty was available and was wondering if I may have purchased an unreliable car in the long run? In term of driving I usually don't drive the car hard (it's the 3.8 model) and I plan to drive it as long as it will go. I'm not in any position to get another car in the next few years.

So anyways, can I get some information and recommendations on the maintenance to prevent the car from being a pile of junk in the long run?

Also, was wondering if you guys could tell me what mileage you've put on them and how reliable they have been

I bought mine at 137k kms. Had it inspected before buying and everything checked out. 3 days later my transmission went. I had to dish out another $3k for a used transmission and swap. Now having electrical issues with the car. I think I have a lemon

What year? and what were the symptoms?

I think it depends. Some never had issues, others do. On my 2013 3.8 with the 8-speed, the shift solenoids acted up (shifts from 2-3 and 4-5 were really delayed, as if the car was in neutral for 2 seconds before shifting up or down) at about 60k miles. Transmission was replaced. Now I am at 107k miles and the same problems are happening again. Though I plan to pull the valve body out to see if I can replace the solenoids.

Interesting. Mine doesn't seem to be doing that, but I notice it has a bit of an engine lag and sometimes shifts a bit weirdly going up hill or downhill. It doesn't seem like the transmission on this car is talked about that much though, there's not much information online about it either. Did you ever replace the transmission fluid? I've read that that's one of the things that needs to be done every 60k miles, and even earlier if you drive the car hard.

Where did you pay $3k to get it swapped? I have heard way higher numbers. I think mine is on it’s way out.

I recently had my transmission replaced in my 2013 3.8 with 152k miles. Used transmission with 3 year warranty was $1950 out the door. Labor cost was surprisingly low (estimated at 5.5 hrs.)

I have a 2012 3.8L with 92K. There are other forums talking about our tranny. Mine was shifting hard from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th when it wanted. It would do it for a day or so then go away for weeks never throwing a code or light on dash. I swapped out solenoids in the tranny with a flush and new pan/filter. I just got it back this week so too early to tell but need to put mileage on to see if it’s fixed.

2009 4.6 with Tech pak. My tranny was going into limp mode randomly. Drove fine when in sport mode but in auto almost always went into limp mode. CEL with code P2704 (transmission friction element E and P0783 (3-4 shift).

2010 4.6 I bought it with 130k miles so I thought it last forever. So wrong. In 3 years since I drove less than 10k miles as I am retired. Suddenly transmission died. The dealer asked 10k to fix it. So I went elsewhere and paid 4500. Very angry with Hyundai for failing on me. I shouldn't have spent so much money to fix that. There were other issues as well but I am too upset to go into details at this point.
Took it to carmax for a price quote if I want to sell it. They gave me 2k so I showed them the receipt for 4500 I paid. No freaking use. So I kept it. It is drivable and I like the smooth drive as always but I would not buy a new genesis myself. I don't know how long the transmission will last this time. This is a big shadow at the back of my mind though. Just don't feel peaceful at all because I am retired and I want a reliable car to go short ride sometime and don't want my old lady to bitch on me for buying a lousy car. It was just vanity to buy a fancy car like this. I always had Toyota before and had 3 accidents so it looked shabby but it never ever quit. Best ever built but not fancy looking the Toyota 4 cylinder clunker my friend. The genesis was so sexy and the ride super smooth but the 4.6 German transmission didn't last. Too expensive to fix and too painful not to fix.
Wife said i should have bought a used Lexus instead.

Sorry to hear your problems but buying a different band may not be a better bet. I know a Lexus owner that had a transmission problem long before your miles. Sucks when you are the one with the real world problem.
You said you would not buy a new one but if you did, Genesis has a 100,000 mile warranty on the trans.

I've had three cars that needed transmission work over the years, all with less than 80k. Oh, an engine too. Fact is, every brand has the potential as mechanical things break and wear out. Meantime, enjoy the ride. I hope your experience in the future is good though.

The difference is you can't work on these car's transmissions. Imagine if all of your other cars required you to replace the transmission for the problems you had...

Having a part failure is common among any product, sometimes things fail or wear out. But making a component that is prone to failure impossible to repair is unacceptable.

Not sure I'd agree with the "you can't work on these transmissions" statement. Evidence is right here in the forums with some very nice detailed writeups about solenoid replacement in the 8 speeds.

An extended warranty is my solution to any future problems. Mine cost $1295 when my ‘12 3.8 was almost three years old. It covers 10/120,000 and expires in August ‘24. It has nearly paid for itself already with two repairs. I’ll pass the car to my Son’s family in about 5 months.

I replaced the solenoids in my tranny haven’t had a problem since. You can fix the issue all our cars have
