  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi, I'm going to get through this winter with all seasons but for next year, winter tires will be a must. In looking at prices, I can get 17" rim/tires for a fair bit less than staying with 18"s. They would be used for 3-4 months tops.

Other than the obvious speedo reading issue, will I have any issues from down sizing? Will the transmission shifting be earlier?

17"s work on the Base model so I'd think they'd work on the Premium too.

Thanks ..... RonJ

Yes, 17" will work fine. You just need to get one with the same overall diameter as your 18" (or within a reasonable percentage). Any tire shop can help you with that. Websites like Discount Tires will show you the proper size snow tires for your car (with some specific suggestions). Or Google "tire calculator."

Just noticed you were in Canada, and not sure if Discount Tire operates there, so just put in zip code of nearest US city to get some ideas on what snow tires to use and their size.

I have a 2012 V6 premium. I could not get 17" or steel rims to fit over the large calipers on the fronts. I had to go to 18" aluminum rims to fit. You might want to test fit any 17" rim for clearance before purchasing them.

This is what I've read as well. I was able to do it on my 09 but it seems the newer ones have larger brakes. You can see the small amount of clearance I've got in these pictures. http://imgur.com/a/XpjbW

If that is a pic of your front wheel, you have different calipers than I do. Mine look similar to Brembos. I had clearance issues not only with the diameter of the rotor/caliper combo but also with the thickness of the caliper.

I just put winter tires on my 09 4.6. I bought it used and it came with 17x7 old man rims. I put a set of 235/55R17 Michelin XIce xi3 on them. 1010tires.com has a tire calculator and it says there is only 0.18% difference. I highly recommend the michelin winter tires. The grip is excellent, even in Winnipeg where its -32c right now

Hi Katman, are you saying the Base 2013 Genesis with 17" rims has smaller brakes then the Premium with 18" rims has? I wasn't aware of that.

I'll have to hit the parts books, see if calipers and rotors are different for Base and Premium. Learn something new everyday!!

RonJ, yes part of the Premium pkg is a larger/upgraded brake system. Take a look in your owners manual or get a sales brochure. I know the pic was small, but were you able to see my caliper?

Must be part of Canadian models that V6 Premium Package has different brakes for V6 Base Trim model. I didn't think that is true of US models.

That may be part of the big price difference in Canada.
Base- $39,999
Premium-$44,999
Tech-$49,499
Rspec-$53,499

Is that supposed to be a Genesis? If so, those are different wheels than a Genesis uses.

I don't see anything about this in the PDF brochure. Unless I'm missing something obvious.

I grabbed a hard brochure from the dealership when I was shopping for my car, and still have it. It shows the upgraded brakes as part of the premium pkg. Maybe they changed it for MR 2013.

Not sure if you guys have heard of the "internet" but they have Canadian specs online here:
http://www.hyundaicanada.com/Pages/showroom/Specifications.aspx?model=genesis
Click on "Performance" tab, and it shows that all 3.8L V6 trim levels have the same front and rear brakes. Some trim levels may have automated parking brakes (not sure) but the front and rear disks and calipers are listed as the same for all three 3.8L V6 Trim levels. The V8 has larger front brakes, due to the extra 83 Kg (183 lbs) of the 5.0 engine compared to the V6 engine.

I have in front of me brochure #013SA-L1100N from Hyundai Canada titled "2013 Genesis". There is no mention of different brakes between Base, Premium or Tech. On my Premium, the front calipers are two piston, I guess that's where the reference to Brembo comes from. Parts suppliers such as http://www.conicellihyundaiparts.com/ do not show a different caliper, rotor or pads for the 2013 3.8 Genesis. Other parts stores such as NAPA are the same.

As I have stated, they must have changed the brakes for 2013. I have a 2012 V6 Premium as it shows on my signature and my car does have different/larger calipers on the front than on the rear, and also larger than the ones in your pic. I did look on the CDN site after reading that yours were different than mine and saw that they no longer advertise the big brake pkg. When I can, I will get a better pic of my front caliper and post it so that you can see what I am describing.

All Genesis models have larger rotors in the front than in the rear. In fact, I don't recall seeing a car with 4-wheel disk brakes that did not have larger rotors on the front, although that might exist on a rear-engine RWD car like Porsche.

Just checked the Porsche 911 Carrera S, which is rear engine and RWD, and even it has larger disk rotors in the front.
