  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Which is better. My car is 107K and seems fine. just not super fast.

dealership is trying to upsell me to the flush. intuition says drain and fill will be fine. it's just maintenance

Go with your gut. Drain & Fill is fine - especially if it's never been changed before. Flushing could dislodge some particulates that could clog some critical passages and starve some portions of the trans of lubrication....

I would only do a Drain/Fill. You'll get < 3qts exchanged each drain/fill of the 10.5-11qts in the pan. If you drop the pan, you'll get almost 7qts drained.

yep. drain and fill is 211 plus tax. Flush is like 380. He made the argument that the flush does indeed free debris and that is the whole point of doing it. However, the question is will all the debris be removed 100%? No prob not. Could cause more debris to circulate in system and make power train act funny, maybe throw enough codes to put car in LIMP mode, in my estimation.

He did sound convincing though...

I would not go for the flush. Flushes tend to clog up the transmission valve body and filter on older transmissions. I would just do regular drain and fills including a filter change during your first service at 107k miles. After that just drain and fill every 60k miles and change the filter again at 227k miles during the second drain and fill. These intervals are just my recommendation for long lasting transmission.

Note: The original transmission filter usually has the most fine metals due to the new break-in metals present from the factory and should be changed by 100k miles if transmission longevity is the goal. The second filter should easy go another 120k miles without any issues if the transmission fluid is changed regularly at 60k mile intervals.

I was told the transmission filter is little more than a metal screen in a 130 piece of plastic that does very little except catch rocks

What I really need is a proper transmission service. I.e. removing the pan. carefully cleaning the pan and magnets, replacing the gaskets and hardware if needed, inspecting the solenoids pan etc. ,visually inspecting and reporting on the condition of the fluid, getting some diagnostic metrics and quality feedback from an experienced Genesis mechanic who can drive it before and after

But that would cost over 1000$ and the big Hyundai Genesis dealership here in town said their next opening for service is April. There are too few mechanics and the ones there are working, are often newer and less experienced.

So I'm going with a drain and fill...

Drain and fill @ high-mileage. Too much change to new slippery fluid can result in excess clutch slippage and you wishing you had that old "sticky, grit filled" fluid back in the trans.

I've had no problems (on other cars) with full transmission fluid exchanges, even at 200K miles. The cooler lines are connected to a big cylinder with a movable diaphragm inside. The car engine is started, and the transmission pumps old fluid into one side, forcing new fluid into the return cooler line and into the transmission.

The transmissions in our cars are not like other cars and people have reported issues here on this forum after complete fluid flushes.

Hence my recommendation.

Got it, and I understand. However, do note that a fluid exchange is not a fluid flush. Nothing gets stirred up, because it is just the normal pumping operation of the transmission. Most places do flushes. I don't know how many places have the fluid exchange equipment instead.

The transmission filter is not changed during a fluid exchange as a rule. The process is better for low mileage transmissions that do not need a filter change; not older high mileage transmissions with old filters.

Older transmissions seem to last longer with drain and fills combined with filter changes.

Not sure what cars you guys are driving but my 09 Genesis 4.6 transmission filter is built into the pan, the dealer wanted over $1000 to do the job when ii had about 90,000 miles on the car, i took that $1000 and bought a Quick Jack 5000 and did it myself and now i have my own lift, i replaced the pan with a new one and Redline D6 transmission fluid, 125,000 miles on it now she still running great
