  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Driver seat backing detached

Hi Mike,
After you pulled the zip-tie tight, how did you hide the long ends? Did you tuck underneath the panel?
Thanks

You can just cut the long ends off before pushing the zip-tied metal clips into the frame of the seat. The zip ties get the metal clips reattached to the seatback. Cut the tails off the zipties, line up the pointed ends of the metal clips to the squareish holes on the seat frame, push seatback and those metal clips will snap into place.

I really appreciate the suggested zip tie fix on here. I have a 2015 Genesis Sedan with 85k miles and my driver seat back just “popped”. Exactly the same locations as the pics shown in this post. I’m planning on doing the zip tie fix and going to try to add some epoxy to put the clips back together with the zip tie adding reinforcement. I may try 3D printing some additional side supports too. I’ll figure it out once it get the back off and the clips out of the seat.

Thanks again for this post and to the forum in general.

This just happened to me. I know the condition that caused the failure in my case. My daily drive consists mostly of winding back roads that would be perfect for filming car commercials. I was in a tight curve under a heavier than normal side load when I felt it. It felt to me like there was something in the seat back pocket that slid from one side to the other. After getting home I noticed it. Both of the plastic retaining clip holders were sheared off. Nothing was in the seat back pocket.

This forum has been an excellent resource. I found this thread today and went with the 5 cent zip tie repair @the.tru.albertan posted. That had her all fixed up in a just a few minutes. Warranty is great if 1) It is covered by warranty and 2) You don't mind the hassle of leaving the car with the dealer for a day or two (which I do). Thanks again Albertan!

Now for my rant: I think I may be asking too much from this car. I was not cornering like I would in a Porsche! I bought this car to replace a Toyota Avalon. The Genesis is many times better at handling than the Avalon ever was. But if I need to drive it the same to keep things from breaking I would go back to the Toyota for the reliability. The Avalon was 10 years of only changing oil, tires, and brakes. My experience with the Genesis have not been great in that department. For having only 37,000 miles my car is no stranger to the dealer. Perhaps it's only my expectations for the Genesis need to be re-calibrated.

Did you ever get this sorted out? The metal tabs squeeze upwards from the bottom. While squeezing the bottom part of the metal tab, pull th etab outwards from the seat. It's a bit tough but just work at it. Once, it's out, you can do the zip tie fix. The goal of the fix is to get the metal tabs mounted back onto the seat back, secured, and then pushed back in to wear you originally pulled the metal tab from. Solid fix.

Hi, I used your ziptie fix a while ago for driver's seat... now the passenger seat happened! I don't remember how to fix it but I know there were pictures which helped me. Do you still happen to have the pics? I can't find them anywhere😢

I completed this operation today, but only had 8" ties. A 14" tie would have been better for this job. I ended up using a pair to extend the length, but it wasn't as smooth as I would have liked.

Where did you attach the zip tie to mine just broke

@wmorgan330
Quick and easy zip tie fix here with pics:

Old thread but I fixed mine for a couple of dollars.
Yes the 2 clips are broken, but try to remove the broken clip from the seat area, {not the seat back)
Now bear with me here, super glue them back together, and wait till it sets
Then cover the broken area with more super glue and cover with baking soda then more glue over the soda.
I also used a small syringe to "puff" the baking soda to the area I couldn't get to.
Leave it overnight to make sure its set then just gently push it back together
This is an old tip that works and sets like concrete, fixed mine a few years ago and still holding

Easier fix is via the TSB 19-BD-004HG. You can get metal clips that snap in to replace the plastic they screw in to where the plastic clips broke off.
TSB PDF Link on NHTSA.GOV https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10165460-9999.pdf This is the proper fix, vs. zip ties.

It has be superseded by TSB: 20-BD-003HG dot.report Bulletins

Oh I need this, where can I purchase these clips? This would be perfect 👌🏽

I bought a used 2015 with less than 39,000 miles on it. The car is in almost mint condition, inside and out. Had it for over 2 months. Love the drive, then the driver seat back pops. Luckily it happened one day before my warranty expired. The dealership is ordering a new back cover. I asked the advisor if he's seen this before, he said yes, for some reason these original clips are very fragile, but he said the new ones are stronger. I asked him about the passenger seat and he said it's not broken so there's nothing he can do.
DURING THE MONTH ON MAY 2025, I TOOK MY 2021 GV80 TO THE MY NEARSEST GENESIS DEALERSHIPS AND SHOWED THEM THE PROBLEM WITH THE BACK OF MY DRIVERS SEAT. THE BACK OF THE DRIVERS’ SEAT IS COMING APART AND THE INTERNAL PARTS ARE EXPOSED. THE SERVICE ADVISOR SAID IT WAS POSSIBLE THAT MY 3 YEAR OLD GRANDSON COULD HAVE PULLED APART THE BACK OF THE SEAT (I SAID NO-WAY). THE SERVICE ADVISOR ALSO BROUGHT OUT THE “WARRANTY MANGER “(BOGUS) TO LOOK AT THE DAMAGE. THEY SAID $900 FOR PART AND $200 FOR LABOR PLUS TAXES. ON THE SAME DAY 5.2.2025, I contacted the Genesis Motor customer service team for the United States at 1-844-340-9741. MY CASE #40839362, I INFORMED CORPORATE THAT I FOUND OTHERS (ON THE GENESIS FORUM) WITH THE SAME PLASTIC CLIP BREAKAGE WHICH RESULTED IN THE SAME DAMAGES I HAVE ON MY VEHICLE. THE PROBLEM STEMS FROM A DESIGN FLAW INVOLVING PLASTIC SEAT CLIPS THAT WILL EASILY BREAK. CORPORATE ADVISED THAT AFTER CONTACTING THE DEALERSHIPS (2) IT WAS CONCLUDED THE DAMAGE WAS CAUSED BY “OUTSIDE INFLUENCES” AND COULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY; FUTHERMORE THERE HAD NOT BEEN ENOUGH DOCUMENTED CASES TO WARRANT A REPAIR BULLENTIN OR RECALL.

I would start by showing them this thread. Just had mine fixed under warranty for the exact same thing. No external force, just opened the door one day and it was like that.
