Driving on ice.

Had my first experience driving on ice, last night.
First snowfall of the season in Chicagoland. Had no problem on the expressway with a 1/2" of snow, but when I got off the expressway, the local roads were all ice. "Somebody" was too busy to spread salt on the roads.
It was so bad, I crawled along at 5 mph for a few miles until I got on some local roads that had been salted. I don't feel too bad. All the rest of the cars were creeping along at 8 mph.
From now on, I'm staying home when ice storms are predicted.....I'm going to have to look into snow tires next winter. (not sure if snow tires would help on ice)

There is some improvement on ice with the Michelin X-Ice 3s on 18" dedicated wheels with my R-Spec. However Minneapolis, my heart rate is generally faster because of other people's tires and driving habits than my own.

Michelin xice 3 or Blizzak ws80, either way, you can't go wrong. The national insurance bureau rated the Blizzaks and Michelins #1 and 2

"Winter tires" as opposed to "snow tires" make a difference. If you put good winter tires on your Genesis, you will likely be amazed at the difference between them and the all season tires that come with the car. I scared the #!@# out of myself the first time I drove my Genesis in winter conditions. Put wither tires on it ASAP after that experience. Now, I have six years driving two different Genesis in Ottawa winters and have no concerns about driving in all but the worst of conditions. I do however make very sure that my winter tires go on early and come off late.

Just had my winter gear put on at Costco Innes Rd. Thursday evening. Just in time. Staying in today so won't be able to check em out in the snow lol

I can agree with you 100%, I live in FL , but was born in North Europe, and there winter tires are mandatory, November 1-April1 you have to change the tires, if you don't have and you are pulled over, the ticket is a guarantee for not having them. And the driving in complete difference.
A lot of drivers use also tires with spikes, it's kinda interesting feeling, you know you drive on plane ice , but the car drives as you drive in plain clean asphalt

Studded tires have been illegal for 30 years in Illinois.
I can see how winter tires would help in the snow, but have my doubts about helping on ice.
Until the mid 80's, all my cars were rear wheel drive, so it didn't take very long to remember how to drive with limited traction with RWD.

Province of Quebec requires snow tires, by law. If you have Quebec plates and are caught without snow tires, you get ticketed. But if you have out of province plates with all season or summer tires, no ticket.

Winter tires are amazing on ice compared to A/S or Summer tires. Not even a comparison. Notice in the video below the A/S tires barely perform better than the Summer tires? One of many reason's that A/S tire's have been called 3 season tires now days - The jack of all trades, and master of nothing. I just put my winter tires on my Outback and the whole driving experience has changed. I don't have to start braking for a stop sign 100 yards before Winter tires have completely changed in the last 25 years.

Yeah today was a good day to stay out of everyone else's way here in Ottawa. I found a bunch of chores to do inside and never even poked my nose out the door. The first snow fall of the season is always a dangerous time to be on the roads.
