If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. I wrote in an earlier post that I intended to install a Magnaflow exhaust, which I modified. My initial modification was the installation of a Magnaflow X muffler in place of the Magnaflow X crossover pipe. The installation was easy (for my installer). It was a bit quieter than a stock Magnaflow exhaust, but there was still an annoying loud drone upon acceleration at low rpm. At steady-state cruise noise level was quite acceptable.

My research concludes drone is almost universal with any aftermarket exhaust system. The only manufacturer that consistently addresses drone I know of is Corsa, which does not produce an exhaust for the Genesis.

Cruising the web I came across favorable reports of a new muffler from Dynomax. The design is just a year old. It is the "Dynomax VT" muffler. The basic design of the VT muffler is a "straight through" design with a spring loaded flap at the end. The flap stays partially closed at low flow causing exhaust gas/sound to circulate/attenuate within the muffler. At high flow the flap opens with virtually zero back pressure. Google this muffler for more detail.

The VT muffler itself looks like a typical oval design with offset inlet/outlet. I used the 2.5" inlet/outlet model #17156 which fits the 2.5" pipes of the Magnaflow exhaust. Ideally, the muffler would have fitted "flat" with the outlet pipe perfectly centered in the Genesis rear valence. Alas, the VT muffler is too wide to fit horizontally. We canted the muffler at about 60 degrees. The Magnaflow dual outlet pipes just couldn't fit, so we installed a single aftermarket chrome tip. The mufflers hang down a couple of inches more than the Magnaflow/stock combo. We addressed this by painting the VT mufflers flat black with high-temp paint, which cause the mufflers to almost disapear. I do not have photos.

I can say the VT mufflers work fully as advertised. Drone is just gone. There is a little noise increase at former drone levels, but it is far from objectional. The exhaust is louder than the silent OEM exhaust. Sound level is a bit quieter than an OEM Corvette and more like an OEM Cadillac CTS-V. It passed the "wife test" in that she noticed no change from OEM.

The Dynomax 17156 is a direct interchange, according to Dynomax, with Flowmaster 42541 and Magnaflow 11226. Dynomax claims the 17156 at wide open throttle will flow 841 CFM compared with the Flowmaster 42541 at 373 CFM and 588 CFM for hte Magnaflow 11226.

I cannot verify these numbers, but I did do a before/after comparison at idle (600 rpm) when the flap is mostly closed. My gallon per hour consumption rate at idle is about 0.046 GPH to 0.050 GPH, and I noted no change after the VT installation.

I think the OEM exhaust is seriously restricted. I base this on a forum member's dyno report of close to 20 hp horsepower gain with a cat-back system. On most cars one is lucky to get more than 12 hp with a cat-back system.

While Magnaflow and Borla increase exhaust pipe diameter from 2.25" to 2.50", I think this alone is not the big reason for power increases. The stock system is seriously crimped ahead of the central resonator in order to clear a chassis brace. This crimp can be easily removed, and the brace lowered just a bit. The central resonator is actually a fairly efficient design. In my opinion much of the restriction is in the rear mufflers, which can be replaced with the Dynomax VT. In short, I think one can achieve much of the power from an aftermarket exhaust with just these mods.

As for gas mileage increases, I have low expectations. True, pumping losses are reduced with unrestricted intake/exhaust mods, but pumping losses are just a fraction of the gas mileage equation. My guess at this point is an increase in gas mileage of maybe 1 mpg tops.

Thank you for the very thorough report, Rey.

Did I understand you correctly to say that you think there would be a substantial HP gain by just replacing the mufflers with this VT model?

My impression and opinion is that the major parts of the EM exhaust restriction are in three places: (1) the crimp zone ahead of the central resonator; (2) the rear mufflers and (3) the diameter of the exhaust pipes. Again, my opinion is that the rear mufflers cause the most restriction.

Any chance we can get a video from inside/outside to hear how it sounds?

Thanks in advance.

I just installed a magnaflow exhaust on my Genny. I bought it from a guy in So Cal who had it on a Genesis for SEMA 2 years ago. OMG did it open up the engine. My wife doesn't care for the drone, says I am going through my midlife crisis.

Sorry I don't have a video of Dynomax sound. I sold the car and bought a R-Spec. Fitting the Dynomax to R-Spec is a different problem, which may not be solvable because of the tricky exhaust exits.

Even if I had a video, it would not be truly representative. Most of the videos I have seen just show the sound from the outside of the car while standing still or driving by. I can tell you the Dynomax from the exterior is much quieter than either MagnaFlow or Borla.

It is interior noise where the difference is dramatic. At light throttle the Dynomax is almost as quiet as OEM. On heavy throttle there is a mellow muted noise. There is almost no drone whatsoever; and it is very muted.

Dynomax VT muffler - pic of the internal valve closed. There is a soft mesh material on bottom of the valve flap to prevent any rattles.

2nd pic is the universal MagnaFlow X-pipe, which will replace the factory resonator. Stay tuned for my own thread after install. Will be a few more weeks due to unseasonally shi**y weather! *sigh* It was 80 degrees a month ago already last year at this time. Seems to not want to hit 40 degree even, plus keeps sleeting/snowing so my Genesis remains "stored".

Only thing I hear that worries me is the "clink" "clink" sound at around 5:15 which I've heard is an issue with some of the VT mufflers.

I wish it were possible to have the Dynomax VT interior sound with the Magnaflow exterior sound :-). Those Magnaflows sound seriously awesome from the outside.

My observation is that neither test got into the "drone zone" with is experienced a lower rpm, say 1000-1500, and light acceleration under heavy load (lugging). Drone is not so present at highway speeds as it is in city driving.
My own experience with the VTs is that they are OEM silent at highway cruise.

Taking my car in to dealer on Wednesday for oil change and coolant flush and brake fluid TSB. Hoping to get car back in time from dealer and then swing over to the Exhaust shop and get price quote and set up and appointment. I'm hoping by the end of the weekend I'll have it all done.

I will also measure the sounds decibels with my current magnaflow setup and also do the same with the new VT mufflers with the new X Pipe. This would make a great comparison for the two different setups.

I'll feed ya baby birds! Soon!

An update - Custom exhaust installer advised against the Dynomax VT's as he said they sound like ass under throttle due to the exhaust gases hitting the valve in the muffler so.................................................................................................................... he is going to make a custom setup with the MagnaFlow mufflers that I already have on the car. I'll update more on this after I get it done.

Good news... can't wait to see what you got.

I believe that was a problem on the earlier version of the VTs.
The model you have has the foam surround around the valve plate.

The noise was from rattle I think you're talking about, but the noise he is talking about is from the way the air has to pass around the valve (creating resistance) and it makes an undesired noise. I guess this guy did testing for this muffler by Dynomax's request (he's well known for his exhaust work) and he told Dynomax that the muffler sucked. He talked about exhaust harmonics and what causing drone, so I think he is going to install the Dynomax Ultra Flow X muffler in place of the factory resonater. This muffler is good for tight installs and has a built in X Pipe.

He said we'll start from there. Appointment May 11. I'll have to check Amazon's return policy for this item to find out how many days I have before I can return the mufflers and X Pipe I bought. I'll keep you guys' updated, but it will be a few more weeks. Getting the C Quarts ceramic coating put on next weekend by my detailer.
