  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Since purchase, my 2019 G90 trunk does not fully close and lock when lowered or does not release fully and rise when opened. When it doesn’t open fully I can go the trunk and push the button and pull up slightly and it rises on it’s own.

It is intermittent making it hard to diagnose. It’s about 1 in 10 to 20 times in use, but I can’t say that I’ve ever done it twenty tomes in a row. The Genesis shop has been asked to look at it at esch routine maintenance and couldn’t replicate it.

That wouldn’t be a huge deal except that I strongly suspect the reason my battery sometimes drains over 4 days of non use is because the trunk is not fully down and the trunk LEDs are on. The last couple times the battery drained I noticed the trunk was ajar. The battery was drained so fully that they wouldn’t take a charge and had to be replaced.

I informed and wrote this up for Genesis, but their technical team said the suspected an electrical leak by the head unit. They had the car 3 months to replace it. However when I pickedit up the service advisor said he doubted it was the problem because it sat on the lot for 6 weeks without being charged and it started right up. Although I understood they’d actually found a problem he later told me they jyst went by tech support’s recommendation, they didn’t measure an electrical draw.

Anyway, I had to go back the next month to Genesis because in replacing the head unit the dash board got damaged and there was a new defect in the LCD display.

During this maintenance they reported that they replaced the trunk latching system. Unfortunately, twice in 2 weeks it has failed to release when opened. Hasn’t failed to go down and lock yet, but I’m watching closely.

Is the trunk mechanism a known issue with the G90?

It does look like the gap between the trunk and rear panel is larger on one side now, so alignment could be the problem. I don’t tecall the gaps being uneven before.

There are two separate assemblies involved with the power trunk. The lock module has a motor that clinches the lid down that last half or quarter inch, and the power module that raises and lowers the trunk lid. You say they replaced the lock module ("trunk latching system"), but your symptoms indicate a problem with the power module instead.
I am doubtful of your trunk light theory. I have left my trunk open over night before, and the trunk light shut off after about thirty minutes like it is supposed to. The battery was fine.

Thanks for the information. The dealership actually never spoke to me directly about what they did and I didn’t know there were two assemblies required to close/lift and secure/unlock the trunk.

The service statement says “corrected by power trunk drive module assy (installed 81800-D2000” Cont & Drive Unit Assy-PTL”

It’s good to know that the trunk light turned off after 30 minutes. I’d asked the local folks and the National Genesis customer care rep. to ask the technical experts if the trunk light was on a circuit that would automatically turn off the trunk lights after some period of time, but never got any feedback.

If it’s not the trunk not closing that drains the battery, does the latching mechanism release the trunk when the battery drops below a certain level? At least the last two times the battery was drained I also found the trunk not all the way down. Before then I wasn’t checking.

Any ideas what would draw down the battery over 3-4 days of not being driven six times over 1.5 years of ownership? Of note, per the CarFax, with only 1000 miles on it as a “new” car it had to have its battery replaced, and is on its 4th battery after only 15,000 miles. I bought it “new” from the dealer in January, 2021 with about 3000 miles on it. I drove it regularly except for those times when I had long weekends for vacation.

I got a call this afternoon from the National Genesis customer care rep. today that a regional technical expert would be at the dealership in 2 weeks, and they want to look at my car to resolve the trunk issue.

I also have an issue with Genesis Connected Services not being able to connect within the last few months. I’ve hit the “activate service” button with the assistance of the Connected Services team and reset the head unit multiple times, as well as updated software. My main interest in using Connected Services is being able to remote start the car.

No, the trunk does not release due to low battery. It'll stay locked with no battery at all.
The most common cause of randomish parasitic drains for Genesis seems to be the infotainment system headunit. The non-working connected services could very well be related to this.

Since they replaced the ”Drive unit” (power trunk drive module assy (81800-D2000) Cont & Drive Unit Assy-PTL) and it still doesn’t fully release the trunk lid when opened sometimes, and has had troubles previously in fully closing and locking down the lid, perhaps I need the other part?

That other part as you indicated above is:

Power Latch Assembly Power T Lid - Hyundai (81230-D2010)

When the Genesis dealer replaced the drive unit, could they have accidentally messed up the trunk lid alignment? I don’t recall the asymmetry of the trunk gaps I pictured above.

Yes, replacing the power latch assembly might help. Probably the gaps were there before and you didn't notice. I don't think that replacing the drive unit would involve any changes to trunk alignment. It's also possible that the bump stops need to be adjusted and that is where your problem ultimately is. Adjusting mine seemed to solve my issues. (My problem was mostly intermittent trunk ajar warnings while going over bumps, but I did have some rare issues with it not opening or closing correctly. All of this has stopped since I adjusted the bump stops several months ago. Paper work with the car indicates that the previous owner (was a leased corporate car) had the power drive and latch replaced under warranty.)

Thanks. Your assistance has been very helpful!

Got my G90 back a few weeks ago from the dealer. They replaced the power latch assembly even though they could not demonstrate the problem of not releasing I was having every 5th opening or so since I purchased the car “new” in January, 2021.

I've opened it about 40 times in the last couple weeks, and it has only stuck once, a marked improvement.

I sent pictures to my national Genesis customer service rep. who forwarded them to some other department and was told that the difference in gap sizes between sides of my trunk was within specifications. I'm surprised and a bit disappointed for such a premium car. Funny thing, the Genesis customer care rep. said it was disappointing, too, as he had a copy of the pictures.

The reason I took the pictures was because I was thinking that malalignment might have played a role in the trunk not releasing, but changing the latch assembly seems to have mostly eliminated the problem so far.

Sorry the pictures seem to change orientation wen inserted:

You should see some of the panel gaps on the much pricier Lucids, many are worse.

Apparently little known fact bears repeating.

There are two discs, one on either side of the lid I believe, that function as riser adjustments, screwing in and out, that level the lid and provide appropriate resistance to allow the trunk lid to fully open when the remote or interior button is used.
