  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Doing the Type 4 service at 48K Km (Canada $450). Dealer says the Emission Filter needs to be replaced at additional cost of $229.

Do i have to suck in this cost...anyone gone through this?

What is an "emission filter" ?? Need more info, as I just got my 2012 Genny and I'd be interested to know what an "emission filter" is.....

Air filter, cabin air filter, pcv filter? charcoal canister filter? I can't figure out what an emission filter is. But at that price, maybe it's that device that filters your wallet and only allows $$$ to be emitted to your dealer.... ??

I think that is accurate, especially since he already paid $450 CAD for Type 4 service (whatever that is) at 48K Km.

At 48Km intervals, the basic engine air filter is supposed to be replaced as is the "fuel tank air filter." From what I can gather in the service manuals, this filter is on the top/right side of the fuel tank, accessible via a rectangular plate bolted to the trunk floor next to the battery.

In my PDF of the service manuals, the last step (# 8) is a doozie:
Emission Control System > Evaporative Emission Control System > Fuel Tank Air Filter > Repair procedures
Replacement
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
2. Remove the service cover (A).
3. Disconnect the canister close valve connector (A).
4. Disconnect the vapor hose (B) from the canister.
5. Remove the installation bolt (C).
6. Disconnect the vapor hose (A) from the connector assembly (B).
7. Remove the fuel tank air filter after removing the connector assembly installation bolts (C).
8. Install a new fuel tank assembly.

I hope step 8 is supposed to be "Install a new fuel tank filter assembly!" Otherwise this job is going to be expensive! And why bother with steps 1-7 if you're going to replace everything anyways? haha

The job doesn't look difficult at all; anybody mechanically inclined can handle it. I don't see any special tools needed either... just removing a hose & clamp and a few bolts.

I did my own work on my two 2006 Sonatas, they didn't even had a 'fuel filter' as such. More like a screen thing. So this 'emission' filter ties into the vapor system then. Yea, if it's accessbile via the trunk it's not that difficult. Just don't be smoking when you pull that cover off.

I would think anything EMISSIONS related should be covered under 100K warranty- I would say

...except for $300 'consumables' like "filters"...of course.

I don't see any point in replacing the fuel tank filter unless something is wrong with it or the check engine light comes on.

I wouldnt consider a $230 filter "consumable".
Federal laws on emmissions service/repairs are pretty strict.
I would not touch it.

I brought this up about a year ago...and not many knew much about it. When I asked my dealer - they told me not to worry about it. I wish I could get that in writing...my guess is they didn't want to risk screwing something up. He mentioned that it would require taking the back seat out...and getting into the gas tank. And - this is the service manager I am talking to. I was shocked they were turning down work...

Not the first time to turn down work. I was just told they couldn't align my car because their machine will not do 18's? At first I was angry because I had paid for the service before there. He said - Well - in the past we had a set of smaller wheels we could put on it for the alignment. He complainted that the machine is $16K...and hopefully they would get it soon. I am still considering calling HMA... I asked him what he would do with someone with an Equus wanting an alignment as their wheels are even bigger.

They keeping putting money into the aesthetics at my dealer...but definately have a short coming in service. Sorry - I am getting off point..

I didn't have mine changed. If the dealer doesn't feel up to it - maybe I should just pass for now.
