  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello guys!. I am New to this forum,
Just got my 2009 Genesis v6 One owner, 125k miles.
Last oils change guy visited JefLub, (or whatever it is spelled) and those ppl put 5-30 instead of 5-20, and on top of that am assuming 1 quart. (Have approx 1 inch over max mark on dipstick)

So what should I do?
Planning to drain and fill with 5/20 but this engine (I believe). Still holds quart or so inside. So it will be mixed (whatever brand) 5/30 and Mobil1 HM 5/20.

What do you think. ?

I wouldn’t worry about the oil weight. The 1 quart over, yes. Also heavens knows what they used.oil filter

In inch is to much and yes, too much oil can cause damage. The 30 weight is probably not a big deal this time of year. I'd have them suck a bit out and ask them for a recommendation for a reputable place for oil changes.

The 4.6 is rated for either 5w20 or 5w30 so there is absolutely no issue mixing the two weights and brands. Don’t worry about that.

But being overfilled could definitely be an issue. I would drain out some until it gets back under the Max mark on the dipstick.

This is why i change my own oil. Actually TBH i just like doing it :). As other have stated, just drain some if possible or change it out. What's 30 bucks among friends?

Amazon and other places have vacuum oil removers. These suck all the dirty oil out of engines. I purchased a medium sized one which I have used successfully three times on other vehicles.

One strategy: with a absolutely clean recovery tank, feed one of the tubes that will come with the kit into the dipstick tube. Suck out 2 or 3 ounces at a time until the oil level is correct. Note that you are NOT underneath the car ! When you reach the correct level, STOP !

If you cleaned the recovery tank, you actually could pour that brand new oil back into the oil bottle using a funnel if you do it carefully.

Using an OEM filter is more important than the difference between 5w20 and 5w30.

Edit: Sept 5 2019 My owner's manuel for my 2014 clearly says 5W20 oil V-8 , 5W30 oil 3.8 v-6 So don't run the lighter oil in the V-6 !
