If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

This morning when I started the engine, the engine rattled violently and it made a loud noise. Also the engine problem signal light came in.

I pressed the gas pedal a few times and about 10 to 15 seconds later it came to normal. (a lot of white smoke came out, too.)

It sure was a rattling experience and scared me for a while.

The engine shook so much the whole car was shaking...

I have V8.

GET TO THE DEALER.

I haven't had any problem but if your engine really did this, get to the dealer and get it checked out.

Well, my valve lifters are being noisy compared to when I first got the car. I have an appointment on Monday for them to check that out and also the rear brake pads that always squeal super loud when braking lightly in reverse.

Go over to the Fresh Alloy (Nissan/Infiniti) forum and check out the threads on rattling engines/white smoke coming from the FX45/M45's. I'm still not sure they've figured out what it is, but it happens with the Infiniti V-8 as well. My '06 M45 had that problem occasionally. Don't have it anymore, so I'm not sure what the problem was.

No issues here w/about 1600 miles on my V8. Keep us posted and good luck!

I have the V8 and was driving home on Thursday an noticed a valve knocking. Sure sounds like a lifter problem to me as previously written in this thread. Obviously not a good thing.

I just dropped it off and will see what they find. Car has 1200 miles. They are bringing in the regional engineer so I wont know till mid next week.

I can tell you that I'm very impressed with the way they are handling this for sure.

Geez, you guys are starting to scare me.

On April 1st, I will be leaving on a 17 day trip, first to Columbia SC, then to El Paso TX, then to Phoenix AZ, and lastly I will spend a few days in Roswell NM. I don't want to see any problems while on that trip. I will report what gas milage I get on the open road while on that trip.

To date, 1500 miles, and the car runs like a champ. Will get the oil & filter changed a couple days before I leave on the trip.

I should know more next week. I will post once I find out what the issue is. If there are any dealers online, let us know if there are any tech bulletins and what they say.

Make sure you take some pictures with the car and the road trip.

Any mechanics out there? I'm wondering what could cause this? I've ripped apart many 327's in my day but am not too familiar with the DOHC valve trains.

The fact that there's noise leads me to believe that either the spring on the valve is not getting it back to allow it to make proper contact, the lifter (not sure they call it that any more) between the valve and the cam is stuck, or the CAM itself become loose - hard to beleive. I guess both of these are are the same result just not sure which one is more likely.

Any one want to venture a guess?

Why would you be scared? You said yourself that your car "runs like a champ". I would assume that to mean you're having no problems. So, when one person (out of however many V8s have been sold) indicates he's having a problem (an obviously very small percentage), you shouldn't be concerned at all. Now, I'm not suggesting sticking your 'head in the sand' as keeping up with his problems can educate you (and all of us) at a minimum, but no where near the "being scared" concept you describe.

Enjoy your trip, enjoy your car...and take pics like the other guy said! It will be like you're taking us all along for the ride! Now then you'll be able to tell us how a Genny rides with 500 people inside!

Valve Lifters?
I thought we had double overhead cams on these cars.
Maybe you got the pushrod v8 option.

Obviously there are no lifters in this car but the sound being made on my car is the same sound you get when you have a stuck lifter... any guesses what it is?

Could be that it lost a "Valve Keeper" or whatever it is called. This is the thingy (wedge) that holds the valve stem to the valve spring. If it pops off, the cam lob slams against the top of the valve stem causing lots of noise and perhaps damage.

I've seen this happen on two Honda's. Not saying its so, but it could be.

You are now seeing the value of this forum. A forum like this can help save everyone of lots of headaches.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your posts.

After that morning, no problem so far. Runs great.
If it happens again, I'll have to take it to the dealer.

I was wonderng,,, is it possible if the gas is not pure, that noise and rattle and smoke might happen?
Like the gas contain water or some other stuff?

I always use premium at Exxon Mobile...

Bob, have a safe trip. Loaded 'em up some CD, then you are all set ! ^^

I just got road side assitstant card form Hyundai. Just like AAA. That's nice...

Jon, your problem is not the same issue at least three of us are having with our V8's. You post simply prompted the discussion. I hope to have news soon.

Yes, yes I realized engine is DOHC and doesn't have lifters once I read your response and thought about it......................

Now.... I took it to the dealer today, and they found nothing. The only idea the 1 mechanic qualified to work on the Genesis at the dealer said is that when the engine is cold (MN) it takes a minute for the oil to reach all parts of the engine and is noisy because of this, OR it is the fuel injectors, which he stated is normal for this car.
