If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My 2011 Equus needs to have the entire electronic parking brake controller replaced. My go-to shop said they could do the replacement but it looks like it might need to be programmed, which they can't do for this car.

Has anyone here had the EPB controller replaced and do you know if it requires programming?

Did you ever find out if it needs to be programmed? I’m in the same situation with my 2012 Equus. My EPB completely stopped working and I’m not planning on having it replaced by the dealership.

Nope. Decided to just sit on it and not use the parking brake for a while.

Here's a short video of the issue I made a few weeks ago. When you engage the parking brake there's a god awful noise coming from the controller.

Yikes ! Sounds like something like stripped gears.

Wow that really is an awful noise.

The problem I’m having with my car is that the parking brake just won’t engage at all. If I press the parking brake switch, nothing happens. The EPB light is constantly on the dashboard and while I'm driving it constantly tells me to push the EPB switch.

I have ordered a used parking brake module from a low mileage Equus at a junkyard for $200 and I am going to attempt to have it replaced by an independent mechanic. I will update you and let you know if that works out for me. I'm really hoping it doesn't need to be programmed.

That's awesome you were able to find one at such a low price!

I may end up getting a used one as well but the prices I was seeing were closer to $700. Better than the $1200+ prices I was seeing for new, but not really cheap either.

My main concern with going used at such a high price is that my shop says this looks near identical to the controller they use on BMWs, which he repairs a lot of, and that this is a pretty common issue with them, so usually better to go with a new part.

At $200 though it's definitely worth a shot, good luck!

I found a bunch of them for sale for under $200 actually on Car-part.com. It's in a weird category but there's actually a lot of EPB modules available. Search for a Cruise Control Computer and it will show the parking brake module in the sub categories.

My mechanic is going to try and replace it this weekend, I'll let you know what happens.

I just had the EPB module replaced today by my mechanic and we did not need to program it, we just removed the old one and installed the junkyard one and now it's working perfectly again.

I think I have an idea as to what may be wrong with your system. Before we installed the module in our car, we plugged it in and turned it on to make sure the module was working and when we engaged it, it actually made the exact same noise that yours did. After installing it anyway, my mechanic adjusted the parking brake and then it hasn't made that noise again. I'm hoping it stays that way. So maybe your parking brake just needs to be adjusted as well? On the wheel hub, there is a tiny rubber plug that you remove and it can be adjusted from there.

Hope this helps.

That's great to hear, thanks! Once I'm back from vacation I'll start by fixing the part on the hub and see if that does the trick. I have a feeling that might be what's broken on mine and the controller may end up being okay, but we'll see.

cruno, did this work? Any news / updates on your repair? I have the same problem/noise with my parking brake.

I know I am bit late to the party, but I found the parking brake adjustment A.F. mentioned. I had to adjust the star wheel to get the rotor off when doing a rear brake job and did not adjust them back properly. After making the adjustment to both sides the terrible noise similar to cruno's went away and no EPB or auto hold light on. I will note that in order for the rear disc to spin freely, you need to put the car in neutral. Make sure to place blocks or weights in front/behind the tires. Fingers crossed this is a final solution. Will be testing over the next few days whenever I park at home. 1657740700601.webp

This worked for me to stop the noise and get the brake to go on and off as normal without all the warning lights, HOWEVER, the brake will hold the car from a stop in gear, (at idle) but will let it move if you press the gas. I could not find a “sweet spot” where it would operate normally AND hold the car. I assume the teeth on the gear in the module are chewed down, and This adjustment Is setting the depth of the e-brake pad when it’s off. Once you hit a point where there is significant pressure, the teeth slip and that’s the grinding sound we hear. I hope it will pass inspection like this. Dealer quoted me $3500 and can’t get the part for two weeks+. These modules are going for $1700 on eBay. If you want one off a pick and pull car, gonna be hard without a lift. Not to mention it’s over 100 degrees everyday here in TX this summer. Crawling under a totaled Genny is NOT where I want to be.

My EPB is working as intended as well as the autohold. Not sure if you have a separate issue or did not adjust the star wheel properly. The EPB holds the car when in gear and pressing the accelerator lightly. It also engages and holds the car when parking on a steep incline. It doesn't sound like you are pressing down the gas significantly to move, but if you are, the EPB is not intended to keep your car from moving against the load of the engine. It is meant to gradually stop the car in case of emergency and take the load off the parking gear/tranny when parked. Good luck with the issue.

Hi Guys,

Can anyone confirm if this is the warning light you are referring to? I just bought a new GV70 and this happened to me on day one. Was able to get the car to neutral, but was not able to get anything to reset. It's at the dealership now, but all their trying is a battery replacement.

I can't really make out much of your picture, but I don't think so. This thread is talking about the yellow/orange EPB light. The symbol on the dash for that is just the letters EPB.

Thanks,
Sorry it is so blurry, it says "stop vehicle and check brake system" The EPB light was on as well, but so was every light in the dash.

Yeah, there's no telling. It could be a can bus problem, or it could be the ABS module. Either one can throw a bunch of lights at once.

Other than the Hyundai dealership where can you purchase the rear driver side CV axle? I brought the rear right from AutoZone.
