  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I had an odd experience this morning.

After refueling, I started my one month old Genesis (4.6L Tech Package) and the dash warning lights all flashed as usual while doing the typical systems check after starting the engine.

However, The ESC light stayed on, and the car would not shift out of park. I was able to stop and restart the car, and on this second attempt the ESC light went out and I was able to shift normally.

My guess is that there was some sort of a problem when testing the ESC and as a precaution the shifter was locked. I'll probably take it in to get looked at, but I was wondering if anyone else experienced this?

Mike.

I also had this happen to me once. As luck would have it, I was at my Hyundai dealer and the Service Manager was walking by, so I called him over to show him. I also could not get it out of Park.

Like you, I shut it down, then restarted, and everything worked fine. Only happened once. Must be that the computer needed to be rebooted. (Glitch in the computer??)

I'm a new 4.6 owner just joining the site. Bought mine on Memorial Day. I've had 3 instances of an ESC light/locked shifter since then (29 Jun, 12 Jul and 22 Jul). My situation's the same...ESC light on after start-up, shift lever locked in park, ESC light clears after a re-start.

Fortunately I carry a code reader (old habit from my previous car). Just for grins I checked for codes when I got the ESC light and sure 'nuff I'd popped a U0101pd (Lost Comm w/TCM) and I've been getting the same reading each time. Since it is only a "pd" code it's not tripping the CEL and it obviously clears itself when there are no repeat occurances after several engine cycles.

My guess is the ESC is trying to communicate with the TCM before the "network" has booted up at engine start. When it can't communicate it shuts down the ESC, triggers the light and locks up the tranny.

VERY insightful & helpful, AND logical. Thanks for that!! Oh... you are officially a GEEK for carrying around the reader :)

This has happened to me on several occasions (4-6?). If I turn off the car and restart it, it works fine. I have no idea why. I have nothing on just got in to drive away.

OK. So it sounds like this ESC issue clears itself once Shutdown-Restarted. Another member (mcginnpm) seems to suggest a TCM Comm issue that is causing this behavior. Have any of you guys taken up this issue with Hyundai to see if there is a permanent solution for this Comm problem? Thanks in advance.

I may have read somewhere that this symptom was addressed by a TSB. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

How are we supposed to know if you read that somewhere?

Sorry, I meant that I thought I read it HERE on the forum somewhere and was hoping one of the "old-timers" could point out whether there was a TSB. If there isn't one then I was probably mistaken. :(

I knew what you meant. I was just joking that we couldn't know what you've read, even if it was here. ;)

Yes, happened to me just last Sunday. A first since owning - about 5-6 weeks now.
