  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Has anyone noticed large amount of brake dust on front alloys? Acquired new 3.8 sedan and front wheels, after 100-mile trip on I-90, it looked as if vehicle had participated in track day at race circuit. Have any owners changed out pads with aftermarket ceramic-based ones? It seems that these pads (Wagner and Raybestos brand) are less than $50 on internet. Secondly, has anyone switched out 3.8 front calipers with those from 4.6?

I have a 3.8 PP+ since Aug., '08, and have had no problems w/brake dust of any kind. I have about 35K miles on mine, and am on my 2nd set of tires (first set lasted about 30K miles--there are threads on that subject on this site elsewhere). I'm told that 4.6 calipers are larger and therefore won't fit 3.8 wheels. There's a thread on that subject matter as well.

Congrats on the 'acquisition', and try out the search capabilities on this forum to find out answers to this, and other questions you'll no doubt have over time.

Enjoy the ride--

There is a lot of brake dust on a new Genesis, but it will go back to more normal levels as you get a little bit of mileage on your brakes.

It might happen again if you get your rotors turned (resurfaced on a lathe) during a brake job (this is optional service).

In the meantime, just wash your car a bit more often with attention to the wheels and areas where brake dust has accumulated. Make sure you rinse off as much of the brake dust as possible with just water (or soapy water) so you don't scratch any surfaces trying to remove the dust.

My 4.6 wheels show NO Brake Dust of any kind, and never have. Something wrong if yours has brake dust.

Maybe your brakes were used a little bit before you bought your car? My 3.8 showed a lot of brake dust for the first few weeks, but none after that.

I've had my 2010 4.6 for 5 weeks now and never had any brake dust on front. - It was rather common on the 2007 Benz but this car never had any. It had 260 miles on it when I got it. (dealer had it driven from the next county) so I wasn't in on those miles breaking it in. I do remember when an incompetent brake job was done on my Accord and they ground the rotors so coarsly that you could hear the brake pads being sanded away! Now THAT left a lot of break dust. I'd bring it to the attention of your dealer. Just wonderin'... when you press the brake, do you hear a shhhhhhhhhhh sound?
If so, rotors may be too rough causing excess. Let's hope this is the least of your problems. I have yet to have any issues. PTL!

Although mine show no brake dust, I just remembered that the 3.8 uses different front (and perhaps rear) brakes than the 4.6.

Reminds me of a movie quote " WE ani't got no stinking brake dust" :-)

If you feel your brake dust is excessive, then consider aftermarket pads. Check out Hawk pads which are sold by TireRack. They "cured" an excessive dust problem I had with a Cadillac. They performed as well as OEM in all respects.

Not saying that this is THE case but I had a Nissan car with lots of brake dust and when I put new wheels on it the brake dust "Went away" I studied the problem and ended up putting the original wheels back on the right side both front and back voilà! at the end of just a couple of weeks, the brake dust came back on the right side. I looked at the wheel design and "Decided" that the air flow was significantly different and that was what I "Decided" was the cause. When I returned the right side to the left side wheel design I was dust free again.

I wonder if that is the case here, maybe all the dust free guys and the dusty guys would post their wheel pictures we could see if there is any correlation between dust and wheel design. I say this assuming that all V6 cars have the same pads and the same for V8 cars. Unless Hyundai is changing vendors during production runs.

PS I worked at Bendix and did "some" brake pad development while at BRL and compounds really are different especially those with cashew glue binder.

My 4.6 has about 8,000 miles and I have remarked before that there is "NO" brake dust on the wheels at all. I have never owned a car that was like this. I did ask the question on this forum once if Hyundai was using some special pads to account for this but got no answers. I still don't understand how there could be a total absence of brake dust. By the way, the car only had 12 miles on it when I bought it so it wasn't a case of it wearing in.

I am a relatively conservative driver, and haven't really applied the brakes heavily in any instance yet.

Compared to German makes the genny has little dust but still there is some. I own a Mercedes SL Coupe and they are terrible for brake dust. Only solution is to go with a Ceramic Brake pad. I use Akebono on my SL, rated one of the best. Almost entirely eliminates dust while performing extremely well. Try a google search for ceramic pads, this will really help if the dust is bothering you.

When visiting my Orlando dealer last week, just for the heck of it, I asked my favorate parts guy to check the price of front brake pads for the 4.6 Genesis. Looked it up and the OEM pads are $110.

Wow, that's not bad considering the dealer wants $100 for the front pads in my Sonata. Factory ceramic.
